But on that note, someone's gender isn't really relevant as to whether I can identify with them or not.

This. I have never understood why it's such a big deal to so many people. Gender, race, sexual orientation... if the character isn't written in a way that allows me to empathize with them, it doesn't matter if they're exactly like me in all of those respects. Conversely, if I can empathize with their struggles, then it doesn't matter to me if none of those things match up to me. There are plenty of female characters I can't relate to at all and plenty of male characters that I can.
