It's no big deal! Of course people enjoy attractive secrets, but as long as you have an interesting secret with an easy to read font no one's going to give you a hard time about it (or really care one way or the other). And if they do, eh, ignore them. This was super easy to read and kinda adorable and that's all that matters to me.

Also, what that anon said about Picasa. It was suggested here once before, I downloaded it, messed around with it, and I think I've made some pretty neat stuff with it despite having next to no experience with such things.

That was just an European making fun of your use of the word football, because on this side of the world we play football like real men! Or something I couldn't care less about sports. (except skiing when Norway beats Sweden, especially if you remember to switch from Norwegian TV to Swedish TV, they sound so annoyed when we beat them)

Do not under any circumstances take me seriously in this comment. Except the Norway/Sweden thing, that shit is serious as a heart attack!

You're not alone, OP! Sometimes when I see "DA," I hear it in a deep, super manly Russian voice.

Can't stop chuckling.

Be; capitalized English should.

Not being aggressive, but why are you watching it if you don't like Eleven or Moffat?

All the hate reminds me of the JNT era.

Re: Dear FS head canon anon

I still want to read the fic where everyone at FS lives in one neighborhood or apt building or maybe one giant dorm-style building where everyone has separate quarters but shares kitchens or something.

what's-her-bucket

I just laughed a lot over this. I don't know why I find it so funny, but it's my new favorite phrase.

It's okay, those are actually my reasons too. Don't tell anybody.

I'm glad you posted this comment because at first I didn't even get what OP was talking about

Oooh! I didn't even think about fic prompts! I was just looking for some commiseration, but since you've put the idea of prompts (or recs, even) in my head:

Teen Wolf (No established Sterek or Scott/Stiles ..Stott? Sciles? They both sound dumb)
Supernatural (no Wincest and no established Dean/Cas)
Castle (anything but Castle/Beckett)
Stargates (any and all pairings but no SGU)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-28 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
i ship it too. where are the fanarts/fics?

Because in spite of my general disdain for the characters and my dislike for Moffat as a writer, there is still the occasional episode that I really enjoy?

And this is Doctor Who. Soon enough there will be a new Doctor and a new showrunner and hopefully I'll like that era better.

+1

This was definitely a major area where JKR was very bad at showing what she wanted rather than telling, because while we're told throughout the books that Slytherin is not the evil house, we're shown something completely different. (although, to be fair, some of the Slytherins did return to fight Voldemort, it just...wasn't shown in the book itself...) :/

But yeah, also +1ing everything else that's been said, there is really nothing inherently evil in ambition, cunning, resourcefulness, and determination. Those are all excellent traits to have, when applied to the right purpose. It's what you do with your life that defines you (also something JKR was better at telling than showing tbh).

That moment in some movies where the male character kisses the female character's hand. Especially in fairy tales, like in Brandy's Cinderella. I love it. <3

If this is a good example of your secrets, they might look boring, but they don't look bad. Bad requires eye-bleeding colors, yellow text on multicolored background, completely illegible fonts, and so on. Good-sized white text on a solid black background is respectable.

Need advice on tutoring (arithmetic)

[personal profile] xerox78 2012-11-28 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I work as a tutor on the side and right now I tutor a fourth grade girl (age 9 or 10) twice a week in math. I've been trying to help her learn her 12 x 12 multiplication facts for the past 2 months and I've gotten nowhere. She's picked up 1's, 2's, 5', 10's, and 11's (up to 9). She does understand that 4 x 6 means four rows of six, so she draws 4 rows of 6 dots and counts each one. That is the only way she can get an answer if she doesn't know it because her memorization skills seem to be nonexistent.

I figured out in the past week that she pretty much can't even add or subtract. She literally can't add 2 + 2 without counting on her fingers or drawing dots. We played a math computer game last session that involved adding and subtracting single-digit numbers and she kept losing because she couldn't add and subtract quickly enough. She eventually gets the right answer but it takes so long, which will kill her when she's doing something with a limited amount of time, like tests.

She also doesn't seem to have any logic. She doesn't understand that a + b = b + a or a x b = b x a. If I ask her 2 + 13, she starts at 2 and counts off 13 on her fingers instead of starting at 13 and counting off 2. If I ask her 5 x 7, she'll count by 5's up to 35, but if I ask her 7 x 5 right after, she's stumped. I think she tries to count by 7's. She doesn't understand the concept of borrowing/carrying/regrouping. She can figure out that 15 + 5 = 20 and 15 + 10 = 25 but if I ask her 15 + 7, she'll say 12. It doesn't occur to her that the answer should a) fall between 15 and 20 and b) not be smaller than the original numbers being added. She also doesn't understand the concept of ascending and descending numbers. If you tell her to put 1575, 6873, and 4127 in ascending order, she'll write 1557, 3678, 1247. Both her mother and I tried to explain that she is supposed to put the entire numbers in order without changing the digits, but she doesn't get it.

I've tried flash cards, drilling, and games but nothing is helping. I feel guilty because her mom has been great, working with her at home, using flash cards, etc. I don't want to tell her, "I can't do anything with your kid," but...I can't do anything with her kid.

This girl's class is beginning to move on to multiplying 2- and 3-digit numbers and division and she is just going to fall more and more behind. I have a feeling that if she doesn't get it together soon, she'll have to repeat fourth grade.

Can anyone give me any advice or point me somewhere I can get advice on helping this girl?

Agreed. It really, really bothered me that McGonagall told all the Slytherins to leave during the Battle of Hogwarts. WTF? So much for house unity/choices defining character/etc.

If only one Slytherin student had chosen to stay and fight for Hogwarts, it would have been so much better.
