Re: Physical acts you have a non-sexual thing for?

I really love the bit in Armageddon where Ben Affleck is screaming "I love you!" at Bruce Willis as his elevator goes back up into the ship. There's nothing romantic between them - Ben is in love with Bruce's daughter - but Bruce is being left behind to die and there's not gonna be another chance to say it. (Clearly I didn't care for the movie enough to remember the characters' names, but I sure did love that moment.)

doing all of that with the cold calculation that the end result will be a better test result is a very Slytherin quality. Signed, another Slytherin.

This part of the original Bad Penny report deals explicitly with the plagiarism rather than getting into the wank surrounding it:

http://www.journalfen.net/community/bad_penny/8985.html

Suffice it to say that "quotation" does not really describe it.

HUGGING. Any kind of hug! ALL HUGS ARE WONDERFUL.

Also, people reaching out across a great distance to grasp hands. It always strikes me as a powerful and moving image no matter how contrived the circumstances are leading up to it.

OH MY GOSH I SAW THIS CHICK THE OTHER DAY!

My friend and I had a huge conversation about her for about twenty minutes just going through her posts in shock and confusion. We both agree we thought she was legit but hoped she was a troll.

At least yours look authentically bad? Whenever I try to make them purposefully look bad, they look purposefully bad/illegible, and in turn like obvious troll bait. I think so anyways.

Speedo and fanservice aside, it takes a very special kind of person to like Namor, I think.

Well it's kind of getting to that point, actually.

I haven't watched 7x03 or 7x04 yet.

But it's also partially out of habit. Idk. The fandom was such a big part of my life for such a long time that it's hard to completely let go of it, even if I don't like the current direction.

Troll.

Man, I've gotten so used to later-seasons Teal'c that he just looks so weird here. But a great moment, you're right. :)

Hah, I've actually come across that before. Pretty sure they're serious, actually.

Have you tried using objects (like counters/marbles/bricks) rather than working with numerals on paper? It might help her visualise what you're asking if she can see 5 groups of 7 whatevers and then rearrange them into 7 groups of 5 without adding or subtracting any.

Heh. Now I want to act really surprised and say "Guys play Portal too?!" Too bad nobody's ever asked me this. None of the guys I know think it's strange that I play games.

The entire point of the Harry Potter story was that a person's actions were what made them good or bad. Even if the Slytherins were painted in a negative light most of the time, the message still stands. Read Slytherin's welcome message on Pottermore; it has a much more positive tone. Start looking at what's good about the house, and maybe you'll be able to look at what's good about yourself, too.

Plagiarism is uncool, and generally does not make for good writing. As a teacher, I can tell you that the tonal shifts between a writer's own work and plagiarized work are generally pretty obvious.

Yeeessssss. Do it. Do it for all of us and then tell us about their response. I'm sure it will be beautiful.

It's very difficult to asses without knowing her, or your teaching methods (not that I think they are poor, just that I don't know and they could be), but this does sound like she may be dealing with dyscalculia. Does she have trouble telling the time (a common, but not definitive, sign)?

Children with dyscalculia often manage to learn simple multiplication squences etc. by heart, but find it much harder to understand process of arithmetic or the real-world meaning of numbers. Unfortunately, it's a condition only recently recognised, so there is not a lot of information about it, but the website http://www.gl-assessment.co.uk/products/dyscalculia-guidance-0 should give you a bit more info alongside a testing tool. I cannot vouch for the site in question myself, not having used it, but I have second-hand recommendation from a primary school teacher

(((Incidentally, my security q was just such a one as someone with dscalculia would find exceedingly tough. Spooky)))

I love all of those. I also really love it when a character hugs another from behind, particularly if the hugging party buries his/her face in the back of the other's neck for a moment. Depending on the context, it can be about the hugger either giving comfort and support or taking comfort and support (or it could be both at the same time, I guess). Either way, it shows there is feeling between these people that is deep enough that comfort can be given/derived with physical contact.

I also like fist-bumps.

but ...

(Anonymous) 2012-11-28 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
if the books are making them do awesome things to help people that they would not otherwise do, even if they have ulterior motives, then tbh no. keep reading them.

Not just you.

I don't really take that approach to it. But that is definitely a thing that often happens to me. fucking annoying
