Friends drift away all the time in real life, too. A lot of friendships can be transient and based on your particular life stage or current activities (ie. grade school friends, camp friends, university friends, extracurricular activity buddies, work friends, etc.) No reason for the internet to be any different.

By the standards of your own post, the relationship IS downplayed (never mind that Sandor never abused Sansa and nor would be considered a pedophile in the context of the world that he lives in, but that's another issue.)

Also one just needs to look at the books to see how many additional scenes the two had as opposed to the show. In the show, the two barely interacted until the events of Blackwater.

Take for example their conversation on the steps; Sansa's all "Why are you so hateful?" and "Does it give you joy to scare people?" when up until that scene Sandor was nothing but helpful and courteous to her. In the book it actually makes sense because of their prior conversations where Sandor is actually coarse to her.
