Lets be honest, it's prospects were dim anyway.

It's a pity... I think some other book that he's writing might be getting made into a movie though. "Lockwood & Co.".

crying because bartimaeus secret

why aren;t they making the movie(s) though? i'm not very informed other than i heard it was being talked about but yeah, actually curious. it would have been one hell of a series if done right

well, afaik Miramax bought the rights to it when it still belonged to Disney, but then Miramax got sold to "investors", and I just can't imagine those wanting to make Bartimaeus films.

I read something recent-ish about how Jonathan Stroud still seems to be talking about movie options from time to time so all hope is not lost maybe. :)

I absolutely adore this series, but I don't think it would work in movie form. What makes the books (for me, at least) is narration and there's no way to include it in the movie: no one going to like constant voice-over, so we lose a great part of the books right away. And I imagine the movie would make all kind of unnecessary changes - like upping Kitty's role in the first movie, because if there's a hero, movies have to include a heroine and hints at romance*, even though romance is the farthest thing from what was going on there. And they would probably cut Bartimaeus' many forms (because it would be costly to include them) and give him a couple of trademark forms - the gargoyle form and Ptolemy, most likely - and make him keep them even when it makes little sense in the situation. And I don't know... I just get the feeling that visually it would be a CGI mess. I think Bartimaeus could work if it was traditionally animated, because then you could keep the demon characters realistic-looking (so that they can be properly impressive and terrifying and dignified when the mood demands it), but be able to make them shift to a cartoony* version of themselves (when the mood switches to being more-lighthearted) and give them certain traits that would carry through their appearance shifts (even if it's just character's voice).

* Cna you imagine if they tried to make it an outright love triangle between Kitty, Nat and Bartimaeus?

** cartoony in expression, I mean... like in anime? I don't think cartoon style in tself is a good choice for this series. The comic book, for example, was done in a completely unsuitable style. I don't know why they had to hire that artist, but for me personally their work was hard to look at.

I would love a movie, but I think it's too expensive and a period piece. Other recent movies based on YA books have underperformed at the box office.

Aww, a Bartimaeus secret! This is awesome.

I really want a movie too, OP. Despite my apprehensions for it, it could be really cool - and Jonathan Stroud seems excited for it too. I'm still holding out hope for one, actually. Despite the small fandom, it's actually pretty popular.

I'm so happy to see a Bartimaeus secret! I just wish the series had a more active fandom in general, and I guess a movie would at least attract people's attention. Even so, the books probably wouldn't transition to the screen well, and I think ultimately it's better to have a small fandom than a disappointing or embarrassing movie.
