also, do they grow back properly? i've seen toenails in people who have lost them and grown them back, but they lost them, say, by stubbing a toe in the wrong angle, and they didn't grow back "right" (they looked sort of bent and shorter than they should be)

I've always taken off either my middle or pinky toe, and they grow back long enough for me to do it again, so I assume they grow back properly if given time.
It's somewhat painful, but it's a release when I'm feeling awful. I'm not quite sure when or how it started, but I've been doing it since I was a kid.
