TW? Self-harm that never happened....

(Anonymous) 2012-11-29 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I went to the grocery store on my lunch hour today. During checkout, the cashier took my hand and turned it to expose my wrist. Very quietly and concerned, she asked if I was getting help for that.

I inspected my wrist and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. No clue what she was talking about, I asked "For what?"

She touched the scar there. This scar is one of a set of three, the other two having faded a long time ago. This one is about an inch long and perpendicular to the veins it's sitting on. I got them from a freaked out cat years ago.

I waved it off, explaining that the cat did it. It's nothing really.

She just kept giving me a funny look. I don't think she believed me.

The problem is that I go to this store all the time. It's right next to my job. What should I say if I see her again and she brings it up?

I hate it when I'm accosted by fortune telling cashiers.

Yes, my life line is unusually long. Deal with it.

If she does this again, you can show her both wrists and say, see, no other scars beside the cat scratch that's years old. And thank her for asking. She cared about you when she didn't know you.

Hahah. Just a cashier - her opinion doesn't matter. And if she doesn't believe you, clearly she's never had pets. I've got scratches and scars all over my arms from my rabbits, after 25 years of owning them. Haven't gotten any bad ones in visible places from the cats yet. And I hear bird owners tend to have damaged hands/wrists too...

Highfive for rabbit injuries! I've got a good 10cm long scar that looks like someone went at me with a (small) knife. But it's really from a VERY wiggly Nethie when I was wearing a really thin shirt. The hell was that rabbit carrying in her hind claws.

Wait to see if you can see them in a not-busy moment and tell them that you appreciate the concern, but that you really really really don't self-harm

if she doesn't want to believe, she doesn't want to believe you, but it might be worth a try?

Speak with the store manager. The cashier is not paid to practice psychology, and she certainly should not be grabbing customers wrists at checkout.

Seconding this. Even if you were self-harming, she doesn't know you, and it's really rude to make personal comments like that to strangers. It's unprofessional.

Jeez talk about inappropriate and busting through personal space. It is really not her place to touch you or comment on your looks (scars included) in such a setting. If you wanted you could report her to her manager for inappropriate conduct. Maybe just try to avoid her line? I assume there are other cashiers there?

woooooooow that is really not any of her business anyway

frankly that's kind of creepy and really inappropriate for her to do that, just like, grab your wrist without your permission (in a professional setting, of all things!) and asking really personal questions...

I'd just be like "It's a cat scratch, and respectfully, it isn't any of your business. Thank you for your concern." Smile, and don't answer any other prying questions. (Well, ok, I probably wouldn't do that. I'd probably be really rude because I am very bothered by things like that and sometimes overreact. But that's the polite version.)

I looked at the trigger warnings, they were all perfectly fine, I thought I'd be ok with this, but that really set off all my panic circuits. It's strange, I've not harmed in several years now, and I've stopped hiding my scars, I don't advertise them but I don't hide them either. The way I see it, I'm a different person now, and that's an old part of my life. I will wear what I want and be comfortable in it.

That said, this just reminded me of some of the most trapped I've ever felt, I hated it when people confronted me *shudders*

Also, I echo the thought that, whilst she might have meant it in a completely caring way, and sometimes people do need someone to reach out to them, it is also quite inappropriate behaviour in that situation.

Also going to agree with the other folks that have suggested to talk to the manager. That is massively inappropriate.

(FWIW I also have a similar cat scratch scar on my wrist. That cat was fucking ballistic and I very nearly had to go to the ER for the scratch. I had no insurance though so ended up not doing so, and it's scarred. I also get questions about it from people, so, I sympathize a lot.)

I had a similar situation of misplaced, unwanted concern once, only I was the cashier. It was incredably humilating as they got ym manager and anything.

Although in my case they were convinced I had ringworm when all I had was a bad case of psoriasis at the time (normally it's not visible, but that particular week it had spread to my face and neck). I can understand their concern as we sold food, but if I had ringworm I wouldn't be at work! They were quizzing me all about any animal contact (i had no pets) and asking questions about "that scaly red patch on your neck" and suggesting ringworm treatments.
I'm pretty sensitive about it but I tried to deflect it casually with an "oh it's psoriasis it's just flaring up this week" but she wouldn't let it go :C
Not a regular thankfully.
