Sorry for getting my gay all over everything, I guess?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-29 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I recently fell in love with a new ship for a really tiny fandom and started writing fic. There were about four other people shipping it, but whatever I was enjoying writing it and happy to have anyone on board, so whatever.

Then I got an anonymous ask on Tumblr asking why I had to slash them and why couldn't anyone ever just let same sex friends be friends anymore and it's not fair to assume they're lesbians.

At the time I brushed it off with a 'people read things differently'. But for some reason I can't get the message out of my head. And when I sat down to write more of my fic, I felt stressed and embarrassed and I haven't been able to muster more than a handful of sentences on a story that was previously a joy to write.

Anyone wanna theorise some free internet therapy on this? Why the fuck does the fact that somebody else is against my ship bother me this much?

Take anonymous opinions (or anyone's opinion, really) on tumblr with a pinch of salt, because frankly tumblr seems to bring out the worst in people. Do what you want and fuck what anyone else says.

First time experiencing an anti-ship comment, maybe? I reacted similar when I got one a few years back.

It's okay, anon. Anyone who brings unwanted opinions about a ship to the people who ship it are massive dickheads.

If that person doesn't like it, they shouldn't read it. That's their problem, not yours. :/ It's one thing if they feel that way, but it's not like you're waving it around and shoving it in their faces. As someone who sometimes does feel like there are too many ships when there should be gen, even I think telling an author to stop writing what they like is WAY overboard. That person can shove it.

Fandom's supposed to be fun, you know? So do what is fun for you, because you never know who else out there is also being quiet because they can't believe anyone else would ever like the same ship they do. Even if the only person's day you make is your own, that's what counts.

Maybe you feel like you wish more of the fandom would see where you are coming from with your ship and when they said there was something wrong with it, you took that as some sort of rejection? :/

Gotta get used to shrugging off the opinions that don't jive with you is all. You're simply defensive of what you like, and that's normal.

Think of it this way, that person who sent you that ask is also the same; that someone interprets canon, or enjoys it, differently bothers them. It's like you're saying they're wrong, to them, so they're pre-emptively defensive and take it out on you. What's not fair? That people don't write their preferred f+f gen-style fic?

So write your fic, and remember that asks/comments like that one are moot.

The whole 'why can't anyone ever let same-sex friends just be friends' thing really bugs me. I see it a lot and it's annoying, because most of the people who say it are either 1) whining about no one shipping their (usually het) pairing or 2) pretending they're not homophobic when they are. Or both. The frequency of people who actually mean that they're cool with such pairings but don't like this one because it's the straw that broke the camel's back is extremely low, because those people tend to just shrug and go 'ship and let ship.' Besides, if it IS a tolerance issue, then it bugs them at least a little bit.

So I'm willing to bet you picked up on the asshole vibe this person is sharply giving off, and that's what's bugging you rather than a simple 'they don't like my ship.'

Just remember it's not your problem. At all. This person vented at you because they saw you shipped a femslash pairing, any femslash pairing, and it has nothing to do with you. They'd vent at anyone for it. They're probably one of those people who runs around complaining about people shipping same-sex pairings complaining about them ruining the friendship or whatever, which is utter BS.

Ignore the hell out of haters and bullies.

There are relationships that I think shippers are missing the point of when they make them sexual or even find it sad/squicky that people ship them. You know what I do? Mind my own goddamned business.

There's more than enough room for everyone and your shipping affects theirs not at all. The pairing can still be friends in their fic even if you spend the rest of eternity doing nothing but churning out porn for your ship. Anyone who makes a big deal over you minding your own business and enjoying something has issues that wouldn't be fixed even if all the shippers they hated started doing nothing but filling their certified "right" ship prompts.

/femmeslash on OP, you do righteous work.

I just...

This seems weirdly and strangely similar to "why can't two opposite-sex people just be friends?"

Except, y'know, for the whole inverse-proportion-of-that-actually-happening-in-mainstream-media thing.

As for the "free internet therapy" thing, somebody cared enough to ask, and you're paranoid. Head over to a comm or some other place that likes to express its love for the pairing; if you can, find an essay for them on ship_manifesto over on LJ. Remind yourself why you like the pairing and that this anonymous person is clearly insane not to.

Failing that, just wait a while. The memory will fade, sanity will return, all will be right with the world. :) At least, that's been my experience with anonymous people on the internet who are being assholes.

Unless, of course, you're shoving it in their face and they've told you before (politely) to stop. In that case, you're an awful person and you should feel awful. But somehow I doubt that's the case.

Ugh, that bugs me so much. Everyone lets same sex friends just be friends! For every f/f couple I ship, there's another ten that I can't see anything between. It's just that someone else sees one or two or three of those ten as totally romantic, but is totally baffled by my favorite ship. Also? Totally fair to assume they're lesbians. It's an interpretation, not a value judgement. :/

Sorry you had to deal with that, anon.

Anon needs to mind their own business. The characters don't give a fuck if you ship them as lesbians.

You should piss anon off more by making even more fic and linking me to it. I'll gush all over it and talk about how awesome it is to see more lesbians in the fandom.

Maybe it bothers you because it's something you really like and they're trying to shame you with their disapproval? In which case fuck them, you've done nothing wrong >:[
