But I think that when people ship those pairings, the fans seem to be attracted solely by teh pretty and not any chemistry or interaction, which seems to be reflected in the fics. And since most fic needs more than "And then A kissed B and it was very sexy" to make it work, the pretty-based screen pairings often don't have as good a fandom.

DA

I've said it before, I'll say it again: some of the best fic I've ever read has been of a pairing with very little onscreen interaction. It's all well and good for people who ship things like Steve/Tony or whatever--their OOC trash is widely praised and accepted. But rare pairs or crack pairs? It takes a great author to make it work.

I mean, obviously the pretty is what gets people there in the first place. Most of my fandom experiences, though, are "come for the pretty, stay for the quality." That really only happens with those weird pairings.

It hasn't happened with 00q at all. The quality has actually gone downhill.

Exactly. So when a ship like that is popular, the average writer is average, not great, hence why it often doesn't work.
