Are you familiar with the manga the movie was based on? It's really quite long; we only saw a little bit of it. And if you think Uncle Auguste is bad in the movie, he's SO MUCH WORSE in the manga. ~_~

I've actually read a good bit of the manga, but never finished it, and my memory's spotty. I remember Auguste being absolutely disgusting, though; I think I even stopped reading the manga because it upset me so much. :/

But I still think positively on it. It had such lovely art, and I think it takes a kind of strength to write unhappy endings, though I remember Serge was at least thinking Gilbert was in a better place, at the end.

I can see that...

Sadly, I only have non-translated manga, and I don't read Japanese. And I really don't see an official English translation coming along soon, given the many, MANY unpleasant aspects of the story.

Yeah, the art is lovely! I actually have a couple of art books by Takemiya Keiko that I got off E-Bay ages ago.

While I agree that sad ending can be nice, it seems like a LOT of yaoi ends up being angsty... )-:

I vaguely remember reading happier things, but my manga days have been behind me for a while, or I'd offer recs.
