Fic tags you avoid?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-29 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Are there any particular tags or tagging conventions you avoid?

For me it's the nonsensical, useless tumblr tags that have been showing up on AO3. I can't take the fic seriously because the author doesn't take their own fic seriously. I automatically assume it's going to be terrible and the few times I've broken my rule and read those fics, they proved my assumptions. I don't think the people at AO3 predicted those sorts of tags when they chose to make the archive tags free-form.

You know, I post on AO3, and knowing how people here (and on tumblr, actualy) have reacted, I've tried to very, very careful with my tagging, limiting it to things like "angst" and descriptions of specific sex acts, because that's the kind of thing I'd like to filter for. And yet I'm pretty sure being so judicious has actually kept people from reading things? Maybe I'm just not giving out enough information in summaries/the tags I do use. Maybe my fic is just not that good. But I still feel like fics with all the tumblr-esque story-in-the-tags stuff get more hits/comments/kudos. /bitter

They get the hits because they post the AO3 link on tumblr. Hit counts aren't any indication of quality or audience appreciation. I've read fic that has tons of hits and quite a lot of kudos and comments, but then the fic was crap. When I read the comments (if there are any), they're usually indicative of fans who don't have any standards beyond pairing and rating.

Any of my usual squicks. I only read certain ratings for some pairings.

I once ran across a fic with the tag: "[name of author's OC] is not a Mary Sue".

lol I think I found that one, too. I skipped that shit so fast.

Ugh,I don't mind commentary tags on tumblr, but for AO3 they're really a bad idea. People should keep those tags just for actual tagging and use the author notes for rambling instead IMO.

I'll also avoid high school AU. Otherwise I can't think of anything in particular that makes me go "Ugh! No!" Usually that reaction is more for just fandoms I have no interest in or summaries that don't look promising.

Also, tag that I DON'T avoid that other people often do: Anything to do with OCs. One of my favorite fic series has a TON of OCs, but they fit the (slightly AU) world of the fanfic perfectly and interact with the canon characters so well (and are just plain awesome on their own) that I always give OCs a fair shake now.

Omega-verse anything. Also I'm not a huge fan of BDSM anything (especially when it's some sort of BDSM-verse type thing) but I...have read those when desperate, and not totally hated them.

I'm this way too. :) Despite this, I've ran across the occasional enjoyable omega-verse story (and the sex skeeves me the hell out, so I don't read those ones, nope.)

Me, too. I make exceptions, but any kind of back patty "ALLL MY FEELS ARE HERE" "I WROTE FIC!" The fic better have a kick ass summary to counter that.

In addition, I'll skip anything that smacks of soapboxing or SJW's favorite words. Yuck.

Any version of the "D/s" tag. Not because I don't find it pretty interesting, but because most authors seem to think it refers to "co-dependent mutual abuse", so.

I avoid the D/s variants too. I've seen too much of it drift into humiliation, which is bordering on squick for me.
