he stalked elena for 4 months because she looked like his ex and then decided to insert himself into her life and make her fall in love with him (given that he was a 100+ year old man who had STALKED HER FOR FOUR MONTHS AND KNEW EVERYTHING ABOUT HER and she was a grieving vulnerable teenager who had just lost her parents this was not that hard)

im sorry but stefan is just as terrible as damon

He followed Elena and did research on her because he had reason to believe that she was (or was connected to) his crazy psychotic ex. And just because she was in a vulnerable place doesn't make him evil for showing an interest in her. He didn't *make* her fall in love with him, either. He took a shot and it worked.

I'm not saying what he did wasn't creepy in some ways, but this trying to shove him into being Edward Cullen doesn't work.

no, but he should have understood that he was working from such an imbalanced power dynamic that any relationship initiated as a result would be inherently unhealthy. but that wouldn't let him play Good Guy Stefan. plus the fact that on top of that he was apparently never going to tell her he was a vampire...and let her sleep with him without knowing he was a ripper. because you know, not like you wanna know that your sexual partner might be a famous serial killer!

Except that that imbalanced power dynamic never actually appeared, and they were a perfectly healthy couple when there weren't any kind of blood-addiction issues going on.

plus the fact that on top of that he was apparently never going to tell her he was a vampire...

Now that's just you making assumptions. We have no idea whether he planned to tell her if things got serious between them or not. As it is, things got serious just as she found out about him.

and let her sleep with him without knowing he was a ripper. because you know, not like you wanna know that your sexual partner might be a famous serial killer!

I see being a ripper in this universe like being a very severe alcoholic. You can't say that every alcoholic who has been sober for years and years is going to jump to admit that about themself. It's not that easy no matter who you're talking to. Considering that Stefan did end up telling her about it, himself, because he wanted her to know, I'm willing to excuse the time it took him to tell her. You keep talking about how much trust issues Elena should have with him, but he's allowed to have trust issues himself.

except....their entire relationship has been one? all of stefan/elena is him guilting her and using her to feel human again himself. it's supposed to be just as bad as damon/elena, only in a diff way

i'll grant you that, but given stefan's tendency to gloss things over to make himself look better it really does not look good for "he was going to tell her."

okay????? that might be true for vampires viewing ripping as that but elena was NOT a vampire at that time. she was human and since he was dating that he should have accounted for idk HUMANS MIGHT NOT VIEW SERIAL KILLING THE SAME WAY VAMPIRES DO AND HAVE VERY DIFFERENT FEELINGS/MORAL REACTIONS TO IT...also iirc stefan again only told elena about his blood addiction/ripper days because she found out/it became inevitable but i watched season 1 6 months ago so i could be wrong

and no, i have no sympathy for a centuries old predator's trust issues in his relationship with a teenager because she might be completely understandably repulsed by him or not feel safe

but he should have understood that he was working from such an imbalanced power dynamic that any relationship initiated as a result would be inherently unhealthy.

Okay, I'm sorry, but do you hear yourself? How many real people walk around with the kind of self-awareness and years of therapy that it takes to recognize the kind of kind of damaging behavior you seem to expect a vampire with a damaged moral code to instinctively understand?

In other words, how and why should he have understood any such thing? Does being a vampire make him more self-aware than the average human stumbling through life trying to figure things out?

I'm not attacking you, it' just that you aren't the first person to say something like this and Stefan isn't the first vampire it's been said about. I'm just getting a little sick of hearing about how all these undead bloodsuckers (which automatically excludes Edward Cullen, btw) should totally understand how abusive they're being by having feelings that are *gasp* selfish.

i actually don't hold all vampires to that standard; hell i don't even hold all tvd vamps to that standard. but the fact that stefan continually portrays himself in canon as a "good guy who is completely UNSELFISH and wants only the best for elena and would never ever hurt her"...it's more about seeing how that narrative is blatantly fiction when he continually undermines it through selfish actions. i wouldn't expect him to understand it if he weren't continually acting like he does understand it, only to go against it at every chance he gets. does that make sense?
