Some of the handmade plush dolls are cheaper and higher quality. Look at this Joltik: http://www.etsy.com/listing/62071006/custom-pokemon-joltik-plush-doll?ref=sr_gallery_4&ga_search_query=joltik&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=all

JFC...

It also should be made of gold. Or poop gold, either works for me.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Frankly, I can't blame you.

I wonder if merchandising companies realize how much bank they could make off of high quality, reasonably priced toys and plushies. I remember someone sold a handmade - albeit, it was well done - Chrysalis plush the day after the MLP season two finale for a few thousand dollars.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-03 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
This is trufax. The Homestuck Kickstarter reward that sold the fastest was the one with with a limited amount of cute dragon plushies that one of the character in the comic collects.

They sold out so fast they had to keep adding a few hundreds as soon as they could, and they kept selling out anyway.

Seriously, when (or if) they sell them to the public with the rest of the merchandise, they're gonna get freaking rich.

Am I the only person who buys handmade plush things and thinks $150 for a decent quality plush is pretty much a steal?

I guess it's different if we're talking mass produced, but I've never been in a fandom big enough for officially licensed plushies to be anything good, they're all misshapen crap. For a plush that someone drafted the pattern for themselves, hunted down and bought a specific type of fabric for, and cut out and sewed together the parts, and added all the extra bits and details... $150 is damn cheap. Artists gotta eat too.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Having worked with costume designers, and know what kind of work goes into them, and having seen step by steps for making animal plushes, $150 ain't bad at all.

I was considering spending that back in the day on an Avanti plush, but then, their animals are all but lifelike.

This is where my mind went too, but I am not familiar with the workings of pokemon plushes and maybe OP is talking about mass produced plushes that are cheaply made and really shouldn't be worth that much, but are sold for that much because of high demand.

It makes me sad though because I have artist friends who make really nice custom plushes and this is typically the kind of response they get. People really need to learn the difference between mass produced- where most materials are being bought wholesale and an individual artist doing one plush for you. That artist has to spend a lot of money on supplies and that's not even taking into account all the man hours it takes to do something custom and hand made (if it is their first custom for a character that also means they have no pattern for it yet.)

Yeah, looking at the picture, it seems to be a factory-made type plush, so quite possibly my objection is invalid in this instance.

I'm still amazed how often I run across these types of objections to actual custom stuff though, so. I have a good friend who makes amazing stuff, and she pretty much only sells to people she knows anymore because she can't deal with the deluge of morons who expect her to practically give it away. Or even better, hand over her patterns for free! Patterns that she spent ages drafting and figuring out and perfecting all by herself. Some people.

Since they're talking about buying bootleg Pokemon plushies, quality handmade things clearly don't come into the picture.

I buy all my Pokemon plushies at the mall. They're usually less than fifteen dollars. If I spent any more than thirty dollars on a plushie, I'd be too worried about getting it dirty to actually enjoy it.

This. Right now my plush are in piles around my house because Giftmas tree, and if one of them cost that much, I'd be all "NO YOU CAN'T SIT IN THE BOX YOU ARE WORTH A LOT"

As someone who has been on the pkmncollectors LJ community for years, I can attest to some of the popular pokemon going for hundreds. I hope the OP isn't talking about the Flareon pictured though; This particular plush only came out about a month ago in japan and can still be found for nearly retail price!
