Lots of people like apocalyptic, post-apocalyptic and dystopian things. I don't see how someone could think that makes you hate civilization. Maybe you could try explaining that it isn't any different than liking magical fantasy or scifi things - people can like tLotR and HP without wanting Sauron or Voldemort to appear, or Star Wars without wanting an evil empire to take over the planet.

I love this comment so much. IDEK, it's just so perfect. (And amusing!)

You are not alone, OP. I love apocafic for a couple of reasons. I think that end-of-the-world scenarios, disaster on a massive scale, is very good for pushing characters to their very limits. The genre strips characters down to their very bones--at my core, who am I? What is the nugget of me that no tragedy can erase? What parts of me fall away or become compromised or warped when very little of the world I've grown accustomed to is left?

A lot of the bullshit is gone, the artifice and social niceties, and people have to decide what's important, what matters.

I am also a huge fan of angst, and I love apocafic for giving me stories that are often fatalistic with a sweet, sweet thread of hope running through.

Me, too. :D

Some people are weird like that and don't like to imagine dystopian futures or ways in which humanity might collapse. Some people don't get that just because you like to ponder, imagine, read about, etc something doesn't mean that you want that something to happen in reality.

OP, can I icon that drawing? It's sexy

OP.
If you really want to, go ahead!

I'm not very keen on apocalyptic fiction, but I've never seriously thought someone who was hated civilization unless they actually started enthusing about how awesome it would be if that really happened. Your friends may be joking, OP. If it bothers you, ask them.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I like post-apocalyptic stuff when it shows how people would react if civilization as we know it changed radically for some big reason, like an alien invasion or crazy weather or zombies or whatever. Seeing what would survive, what would be forgotten, what people would cling to and why or why not ... that's the kind of stuff I'm into. Landmarks exploding ... not so much.

I love that stuff too and no one have ever asked that of me. You hang around some weird people, OP. I love zombies too ad no one's ever wondered if I'm secretly a cannibal. The again, because I love Sci Fi people assume I would love to be an astronaut. Yeeaaaaahhhh.... no.

Tell those people they're short-sighted and stupid? Then move on? I dunno, OP. Good luck.

That's strange -- I've had a fascination with post-apocalypse and life-after-people stuff pretty much since I first played Fallout 1 and I've never heard that.
taotrooper: Plastic toy aliens stare at you in wonder (LOL aliens!)

[personal profile] taotrooper 2012-12-02 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a bit silly. I've always thought that personal favorite plots and tropes work exactly like fandom kinks: just because I love to see it in fiction, it doesn't mean I want it to happen to me/someone else/the entire world IRL. That's what fiction is for, to explore that stuff and enjoy it safely. I definitely wouldn't have thought you wish civilization to end if I knew you and your tastes, OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
i like your drawing.

Oh man I ran into an artist at a craft fair this summer who does the most awesome post-apocalyptic art but unfortunately he doesn't have much of a web presence. :( His name is Peter Standen and you can see some of this stuff here but there's not much.

And it's very region-specific so if you're not from the area it won't be so awesome but still. I bought a postcard of my home city being swallowed by a tidal wave and volcanic eruption and it will be going on my wall when I can find space so I totally get what you're saying. :3

Back in the days of new!Battlestar Galactica, there was an episode where one of the Boomers was nearly raped by two Pegasus crewmen. Fans of the original series freaked the fuck out and declared that this was the last straw for them, as it demonstrated that Ron Moore endorses rape.

That's what this secret reminds me of.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-02 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, William Morris wrote one of the loveliest utopias there is (in my opinion), and one of the books he mentioned at the time as giving him hope was actually one early example post-apocalyptic/dystopian fiction, so... so nothing in particular, but here you go, OP, have a tidbit of vaguely relevant literary history.

It's kind of weird that people assume that. I write apocalyptic stuff and no one's ever said anything like that to me.
cloud_riven: Cute cigarrette box and coffee cup, with smiley faces, holding hands! Adorable! (bff)

I am enjoying your apocapicture. Those people are totally getting ready to circle around that delicious long!dog to catch it and eat it ♥

I kind of love zombie/doomsday/humanity is dying! wank though. It's an escapist fantasy where everyone's current problems (money, assholes you know, deadlines, etc.) can disappear, and folk are apparently on an equal footing assuming they're able or healthy. Add to that how wouldn't it just be awesome if you kicked ass at surviving?

But then the humanity wank people show up and tell them how bad they are for having fantasies, because in that fantasy, a lot of fantasy people have to die oh no!

Me too, and your drawing is adorable.
manifold: A tarsier looks at you with HUGE EYES OF SHOCK AND TARSIER. (HOMG)

Man, I'd think that someone who LOVES civilization would be hella into postapocalyptic stuff because it deals with the stuff that civilization is made of. How even if it falls, some kind of order still rises from the ashes, etc. I mean, it's not the first time a civilization has fallen. Chances are pretty good that people will pick up the pieces and start again.

Also, random long!dog is the best best thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-03 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Are you me? I love apocalyptic stuff (particularly crappy disaster movies) and your artwork looks like mine. (...on a good day.)

For me it comes down to worldbuilding, trying to figure out how individuals and society as a whole would react if 'x' happened, and why.

(Can't say I'm interested in zombies, though, which narrows the selection available these days.)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-03 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
I used to like post apocalypse stuff. It's why I watched Life After People. Which was a mistake.

Not because of the show itself. (It's so over dramatic. XD ) But because of all the factual information they give. So now whenever I read or watch post apocalypse anything, I'm thinking about what should actually have happened to the world around them. It throws me out of pretty much everything.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-03 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
Who are you friends and why are they not very clever?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-04 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I love post-apocalyptic fiction, but I hate people.

I also fucking hate zombies. So fucking sick of zombies in my apocalypse movies.
