Lessens.

Certain people think hatred and bigotry toward LGBT people is somehow more understandable than other forms of hate. Separating the term homophobia from just plain hatred helps to normalize it for these people.

I'm not going to go around scolding people who use the term, but this is what it appears to be doing outside gay friendly places like this.

Really? Because I hardly see people rushing to say, "oh don't call this person an asshole." Only when sjws bring out the scary -ist words like misogynist, racist, and etc. that no one wants to be associated with. Almost like it's worse than using -ist language.

Tbh, I don't believe people who already justify their hate are not going to do so because words that call out exactly why/what they hate aren't used. Ideal, yeah, but crazy unrealistic. All that does is ignore underlying issues in favor of lumping it all together, which is disingenuous since not all minorities or groups face the same things.
