Was Dean not Dean in season seven? I was too distracted by the crappy main storyline to pay much attention to the characterization, so this is an honest question, not trolling.

Not the OP

Dean sure as hell didn't feel like Dean to me. Sometime in the middle of S6, his character turned all grimdark like a 90s comic book antihero and it really turned me off his character. He lost pretty much everything that I loved about him and did stuff like taking up torturing again.

S8 has its problems, but Dean feels like Dean again. He's back to being a more complex character who goes out of his way to try to protect his loved ones instead of ducking their calls or ignoring how much trouble they're in. I'm simplifying things here but I really hated Dean for most of S6 and when I didn't hate him in S7, he just sort of bored me. S8!Dean feels like what I had expected of the Dean of S1-S5 and it's got me interested in the show again for the first time in two years.

He seemed like Dean to me. I think his characterization has always been consistent with what is happening in his life. Of course, I'm also one of those people who firmly believes that Dean is struggling with a lot of undiagnosed mental conditions (depression, PTSD, sometimes I think possibly an anxiety disorder, not to mention alcoholism) and his behavior, to me anyway, seems pretty spot on for someone dealing with these things.

But different strokes for different folks, I guess.
