When I was in high school, someone sexually assaulted me and stole my phone. I did not see who the perpetrator was, so I did not come forward. A similar incident happened to another girl, who blamed both hers and mine on a boy who I knew didn't commit the crime, at least on me. But I was too much of a coward to stand up and say he hadn't attacked me. He was kicked out of school, and committed suicide two weeks later. The actual attacker was caught three months afterward and admitted to attacking me and several other people.

I regret my cowardice to this day, and tried to kill myself as well. I failed, but I have to live the rest of my life knowing I helped contribute to an innocent person's death.

That's...a factor of ten worse than these other secrets. :/

It's okay, anon--everyone makes mistakes, and it's not like you knew what the consequences would be. Don't beat yourself up over it.

(Also, I'm glad the actual perpetrator was caught.)

Two wrongs don't make a right, anon. You should not try to pay for his life with yours. Try to forgive yourself, if you can.
