Re: Once Upon a Time fandom

I'm not quick to go with the "Well other people see it too" defense, but...a lot of other people see it too, and they're not all shippers/Regina-stans/Henry-and-Emma haters. I think the problem is, honestly, that there's so few depictions of adoption in the media in general, and they're rarely positive, and when they're negative, that's significant. And you can't tell me Regina as Henry's adopted mother has been portrayed in a positive light.

Yeah, the "just babysitters" seems to be the prevailing attitude of any characters who raised kids that were biologically theirs in OUaT verse. That's kind of the problem. Like, whatever else was going on there, it seems like Grace was happy with those people, for 28 years, and that they treated her like their own daughter (which as far as they all knew, she was). It may not be a court-verified adoption, but it's definitely analogous to one. It's not impossible for her to love Jefferson as her dad and still feel some affection for the people she still remembers as raising her and treating her well, and maybe being torn between where she's going to live/how much she's going to see them, but that's not dealt with, it's just "Welp, that was all fake, off to my REAL father now!", despite other friendships and relationships in Storybrooke being legitimate and lasting.

I'm not saying Henry is a terrible person. Henry is a child, who's been lied to, a lot, and he's not the first adopted kid to be curious about his birth parents. My problem is not with Henry. When the show itself seems to legitimize Emma's claim to him purely on the fact that they're biologically related, I find that questionable. When it comes down to the dichotomy of the good, noble, brave, savior Bio Mom vs. the evil queen, witch, liar, Adopted Mom, that's troubling to me.

And whether or not Regina "deserves" children, would that even be in question if she had given birth to Henry herself? I've yet to see anyone complain about Rumplestilkin not "deserving" Bae despite being The Dark One.
