I'm actually glad Nu-Blue Beetle is getting canned and that hurts, damn it!

Oof. I felt the same way about JLI. Which sucked. I mean, they lead me on for a year by saying, "Hey, we're getting the band back together!" after the Brightest Day wrap-up. And then what do we get? This...book. About, I dunno, some heroes, their names are kind of familiar, but some of them aren't. Anyway, they're gonna fight bad guys now.

What's that? Jokes? What are you talking about? Booster Gold is a Very Serious Character. See? Even Batman respects him. Heart? Look, there's some generic bad guys to fight, we don't have time to build a wacky family.

Geeze, it's not like there aren't half a dozen writers who could've put together a heartfelt, fun team book. But. No.

I'm still hanging onto JLI...for now. But really, the minute they killed off Gavril, I was facepalming. I LIKED him; he was one of the fun ones in Generation Lost, and would've done a HELL of a lot to improve JLI-Nu.

But yeah, Beetle's literally a complete 180 from the first series. I was hopeful when his friends came to New York that things might get better, but then he became part of the JLI Special and got beamed into space...and now he's getting canned in a few months.

People don't want heart in their comic books unless they're being ripped out of someone's chest and eaten! *sigh*

I laugh because if I don't I'll just cry over the truth of this. I'm trying not to let it taint reading old books with the real JLI characters (especially Booster and good ole' Ted) but its really difficult.

Well that's the silver lining to the whole DCnU thing--I'm not finding that it taints rereading old books because at the end of the day, this is a completely different universe, with completely different characters. So it does sting because I guess technically that means all the old characters are dead, or maybe it's just that their stories are ended, continuing only in the halls of fandom and headcanon.

Besides, and I know I've been on this rant before, but without Ted Kord, there is no Booster Gold: Actual Hero. Jurgens may have created a fairly original (and oh-so-purely 80's) character back in the day, but it was his time with Ted that breathed life and likeability into the guy. And it was his coping with Ted's death that made an actual hero out of him. Even Michelle's death didn't get him to settle down and take some humility. But Ted's death sobered him into acting a hero, and he was willing to give up everything he ever dreamed of having just for the chance of bringing Ted back (which, incidentally, was the reason Batman respected him as a hero in the first place).

I'm still holding out hope that when someone else takes over the reigns, it'll either be Wally West or Booster Gold who Sets Everything Right.

On the plus side then, no matter how they ruin the characters, Gail Simone's secret six characters remain unmolested. If incarcerated.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I honestly thought Secret Six ended with everyone but Bane being dead.

One of those other silver linings. Stories that are better for an actual ending could get that ending, providing the writer actually knew it was coming.
