it's real obvious when writers are fucking around with a character and this is a prime example

nobody is saying he's not canon since what the fuck thats blatantly untrue, it's just that there's a big difference between how he's acted in past seasons and how he's been acting in recent ones

and that difference has little canon basis, it's just the writing in the episodes that has his character going in different directions. way different than him changing as a person
