Hm, I see what you mean. But I think of soul-eating candles as supernatural phenomenon, not a horror phenomenon. The Pokemon world has lightning gods, fire-breathing dragons, ghosts and spirits and psychics and shape-shifters. Soul-eating candles fit this fictional supernatural world and it never occurred to me that they shouldn't be there. It felt like a part of the same kind of mythical make-up, not an imported element from a horror genre, if that makes any sense?

Besides, I see no reason why ten year olds can't have soul-eating candles when they can have electricity generators, flamethrowers, tornado makers and reality-bending psychics. It's interesting how different our interpretations and reactions are.

I'd see them as a horror phenomenon since, within the boundaries of that universe, it'd be something that'd be... if not fatal to the body, then fatal to the self. It'd be a death of sorts. Other things, like other ghosts, other psychics, other dark-types, stuff like that - they're supernatural innately, but only some are horror.

And heh, there's a fair amount of Pokemon I think wouldn't really be suitable for kids in a sane world! You want a Skitty? Cool beans, have fun with the cutie. Other things? Not so much...

I don't have a category for supernatural horror. Maybe it's like the idea of youkai/demons where youkai can be both bad and good but demons are almost always evil. Supernatural for me means both good and bad supernatural beings, so normal supernatural beings and horror supernatural beings are the same phenomenon. Besides, electricution is fatal too and pikachu is like, the flagship Pokemon. I really see much difference between things that kill your body and things that suck your soul, haha.

Imagine if a kid wants a pet wailord or a pet onix inside the house...

Yeah, true... I am putting a bit of a mental division between 'uses electricity, could potentially electrocute someone' and 'consumes souls for sustainance', admittedly, but they're both pretty lethal. I don't know, Pokemon are dangerous XD It could just be different cultural backgrounds, yeah.

Oh man, yeah. Wailmer? Yeah, okay, it's only about 2m, keep it in your pool or something. Wailord, though... (One of the gym leaders in BW2 has one, and I was just going, "THERE IS NO WAY A WAILORD WOULD FIT ON THAT PLATFORM. NO. WAY.")

I wonder... If there's a zombie apocalypse kind of zombie Pokemon, will you feel it's out of place? It does for me but a Chinese zombie doesn't. Also, I'm fine with a soul-sucking magic mirror Pokemon but gear and vanillish from gen V made me do a double take.

LOL yes! You'll need a large pool for a wailmer but even if there's a stadium large enough for a wailord, won't its weight cause structural damage?

I never really pay attention to the descriptions in the pokedex entries so I ignored everything that didn't make sense in the games. I wonder if anyone's ever written a practical Pokemon fic where, you know, magmars accidentally burn things down all the time and wailords keep destroying furniture and building by being released from their Pokeball.

Huh, not sure. It depends on how they handle it, I guess? And I don't mind Gear and Vanillish, personally, since the whole... implication on what's considered to be a Pokemon is interesting to me. (Trubbish, though... fuck Trubbish.)

Oh, probably! And I'm actually planning on doing that :) Things like... erasing game mechanic things, like having only one Pokemon that can walk with you (as per HGSS), since there's nothing actually STOPPING you from walking with your whole team, having more than six in your team is illegal but generally not enforced, catch rates more depend on the Pokemon's strength and determination than rarity or whatever (so a passive legendary could be caught on the first Pokeball), removing the thing where natures = taste preference = attack/defence/et cetera... stuff like that.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
True... And I don't mind trubbish. We've had sewer slime pokemon like grimer and muk so somewhat sentient decomposing garbage is not unimaginable. I'm even okay with magnet pokemon because it's not impossible to imagine living things generating magnetic fields when there are electric mice and fish. But gears are static things and they're not even posessed gears. Just like, no. No thanks.

Wow that sounds fun! Good luck and I hope everything comes together smoothly.

(I'm very sorry for the late reply. No recreational internet access sucked.)

Eh, I just don't like Poison-types XD Call it an irrational dislike, but they look kinda evil and gross to me, and a sentient bag of rubbish... well, ew, stage away. But yeah, just an irrational dislike.

Thanks! It's been tricky but fun to work out.

(Not a problem! :) )
