I used a phrase from a book I hadn't read in 35 years - and when I realised, RL intervened and I forgot to credit for another two weeks. I still feel bad about it. I sympathise with the OP.

after 35 years, how do you remember?

It seemed too good to be one of mine, and it niggled. In the end I googled, and found it about five pages in... though other people have used it too!

Ah, cryptomnesia! NGL, I kind of love cryptomnesia. (Er, reading about it, not it happening to me. Though I'm sure it does, all the time.)

There's an entire chapter in Jung's Man and His Symbols about how Nietsche "plagiarized" an entire passage of Also Sprach Zarathrustra from a book he probably had never seen since he was 11, and it's pretty fucking fascinating.

See also: musicians getting song melodies stuck in their head without remembering what they're from, and proceeding to write an existing song again with new lyrics. It's a thing that the human brain does—memory being bizarrely specific and swiss-cheese at the same time.

It's one reason why careful beta readers and editors are a damn good thing. Other people should catch your brain recycling material even if you don't. And if they don't notice it, pray that anything that's gotten through has changed enough to be fair use.
