Yeah, that's how I felt. They spent far too much time on one-off episodes, there should have been a shift over s4 and 5 to being completely plot-arc driven (Farscape's a good example of this). If they hadn't gone off and killed so many characters there would have been potential for focusing on them as well and not having anything feeling stretched out if just laser-focused on TFW.
