Fic help?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-06 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm writing a fic, and one of the characters is a first generation Indian-American, and I was wondering, is there anything I should keep in mind that I probably wouldn't have thought of?

Like, (using British vs. American English as an example), in British-English "pants" mean underwear, and in American English, "pants" means trousers, but if you didn't know any British English, you might not even think that the word "pants" means two different things, or that you even need to check.

So, anything like that, I guess? Anything culturally that a first-generation Indian American might have to deal with that wouldn't be obvious to look up?

I'm thinking that she's no longer a practicing Hindu; her parent's deaths made her lose faith, but she's still a vegetarian, and I don't think she would be wearing a bindi anymore, but is that wrong?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Just to make sure we're on the same page: we're talking someone who was born in America but who's parents emigrated from India? If that's the case, I really don't think your FGIA would have a problem, unless they're home-schooled and never interact with other kids/people outside the home.

Assimilation is one thing America is good at, and it starts young.

Yep!

Thanks! I just want to make sure I didn't miss anything important that I wouldn't have thought would be different. :)
