And then everyone turns around and calls Merrill "stupid" for turning to Blood Magic. =/

Uh, I never hated on Velanna but I did think Merril was very stupid. She didn't turn to blood magic because she was cornered or revengeful or decided it was what she wanted. She thought she could control it and make it and the damaged mirror (I forget the name now) benign. After a while I didn't really buy her decisions unless I saw her as a bit dumb. Though I like her, apart from that.

Blood Mages aren't all bad!

The two most well-known blood mages are the biggest woobies; Merrill and Jowan. I don't think either of them had bad intentions, if you do Jowan's Intention he evens ends up helping refugees in the Blight.

Because in some ways that is really how she came off? Aside from the blood magic [which, admittedly, seemed a little...dumb on her part], they really played up her naivety if you had her in your group to the point that well...she *did* seem a little dumb.

Merrill isn't stupid for using blood magic, she's stupid because she's (willfully or not) blind to the consequences of using it.
