I saw a screencap of an article about Elmo saying he was uncomfortable working with a homosexual puppeteer on tumblr. I'm unsure if this was a real cap or just photoshopped, but that part really bugged me. I know the JH company hasn't owned Sesame Street for a long time, and maybe I missed something about Jim Henson being homophobic, but that really, really seems against what the creator stood for. :/

...This had to be tongue-in-cheek. Elmo is a fucking puppet. He can't be "uncomfortable" with anything.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
They've had the puppets act like "real" people before. (Miss Piggy/Kermit have done talk-shows, etc) Which is why I'm wondering if it's real or not. It could be, which just makes me sad. I remember when Sesame Street wanted to make a young girl puppet with HiV for their African base, since that is a real problem over there and young girls are often stigmatized for it. Congress didn't want to fund it because it meant the character was 'gay' :/

not that i would expect any better from congress, but ugh.

disgusted anyway.

Does anyone else find it ridiculous that they were more offended at the idea of a character being gay than the fact that HIV is an enormous problem in many countries and communities?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
I bet it's not real.

During the whole Homophobia Chic-Fil-A thing, The Henson company went out of their way to make a public statement and withdraw their kid's toys from all Chic-Fil-A chains due to their stance on homosexuals.

Thought so. I love Jim Henson's work and I feel it's a shame the owners of his former creations are taking a stance against homosexuality :/

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Uh... they're not? They're taking a stance against taking a stance against homosexuality?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I was refering to Sesame Street. The JH company has not owned Sesame Street for many years now. (The German company that owned it last sold the rights to it to the Sesame Street Workshop who now owns it)

Just to note, I highly doubt Jim Henson was homophobic. Richard Hunt, one of his well known puppeteers (Sweetums, Scooter) was openly gay. It wasn't a problem.

The article that you were talking about comes from The Onion, which is a satirical newspaper (http://www.theonion.com/articles/elmo-admits-hes-uncomfortable-working-with-gay-pup,30376/). Elmo's puppeteer, Kevin Clash, is gay himself, and would not make that kind of statement while in character. Also, I doubt Sesame Street would want the puppeteers to make controversial statements while they were performing as the characters.

Did you copy and paste this from an earlier rebuttal of this issue? Because the (now ex) puppeteer is the subject of the current... mess.

My best bet is that it's redubbed Sesame Street footage from a talk show or something. Seems up the ally for the genre. My gut says Colbert.
