how do you know since you've never gotten fucked?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly, you need experience to be able to write. That why JK Rowling didn't write Harry Potter until she after had graduated from Hogwarts.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Um.

That's different because wizards are fictional, so you can write whatever the fuck you want and make it believable as long as there is continuity in the verse.

With sex, on the other hands, lots of people have had sex, so they know what it's like. Most of the time when I read a fic, I can tell whether or not the author is a virgin.

Do you ask them to make sure?

I just use unicorns.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Where do you even get unicorns

do you own a unicorn farm

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
How do you prevent goring?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
how many hands have you got, anon?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
lmao

I didn't say I wrote about sex?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
What if they only have bad sex in the missionary position with the lights off? Just because you have sex, it doesn't make you automatically good at it or make you a better writer.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Some non-virgins write porn like they've never touched another human being before in their lives because they lack the skill to transfer personal experience to description well. And many are writing sex acts they've never done even with other stuff under their belt. So it's really not that easy to tell.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
How many author wrote amazing books that included the death of a sibling or a child without having ever lost a sibling or a child themselves? Or even without having had siblings or children? And yet no one begrudges them their lack of real-life experience, even though it is a common experience that many readers will have lived through.. Why makes sex so different that it's the one thing people require authors to experience before they are supposed to write about it?

You can write about a myriad of human experiences without having experienced them yourself. Death, birth, war, poverty, sickness, love... If you have imagination, if you put some time and care into research, if you are smart enough to extrapolate from other experiences you've had, and if you have enough empathy to understand how it feels for others, you can write about anything, even if you have not lived it and countless others have. That's what differentiate good writers from average ones.

Reading a fic and deciding "obviously this author is a virgin" =/= actually being able to tell whether the author is a virgin or not based on how they write sex scenes.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
er, it's more like JKR could write a believable British boarding school because it's appeared in various media she likely has consumed as part of her culture

(more on topic, yeah, I've seen much, much better written porn fanfic written by virgins than any remote suggestion of sensuality SM managed to regurgitate)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Say I've never seen the Eiffel Tower, I've never seen a photograph of it, I've just seen a lot of paintings by various artists. Going by those other works of art, I could paint a recognizable picture of the Eiffel Tower (well, I could if I could paint). If I were good enough, it would seamlessly blend in to the collection of other paintings of the Eiffel Tower. Maybe a real art connoisseur would be able to tell I was a copycat, but I think most people wouldn't. Also, I don't need to see the Eiffel Tower in person to conclude the person who has painted the Golden Arches instead has gone wrong somewhere.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
the factual details of the eiffel tower's architecture are not really as subjective as the very empirical experience of sex. to some degree, it's true: to a lot of people it's obvious when a factual detail of sex is wrong (self-lubricating assholes, etc), but to a lot of other people it's not obvious and that's why they make that mistake. however, there is a lot of personal feelings and experience involved in sex that a virgin could read about in other fics and attempt to copy, but never fully understand.

If you're telling me that porn written by non-virgins includes elements only visible with a Magic Non-virgin Secret Decoder Ring...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, wait. I've been a virgin all this time because I didn't think sex was worth the bother (and some of my best friends are unicorns), but now you tell me there are decoder rings? Shit, I'm going out this weekend to get laid, and when I do, I expect to get my decoder ring in the mail. I will then go on a smut-reading marathon in the hopes of finding clues to this vast conspiracy. (Which goes some way towards explaining why I'm still a virgin.)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Except these feelings are subjective. I can't write from experience about any sexual experience but my own, and nobody - absolutely nobody - wants to read that shit. I'd rather, you know, write about the sexual experience of the character. Which is as much fantasy la la land for me as it is for anyone who's never had any sex, or even someone who's had just as much sex as me but still considers themselves a virgin.

Plenty of virgins have made out tons, or even had oral, or cissored, or had any other number of non-penetrative fun times. And now you might say they're not virgin then, but that's pretty much a call everyone makes on their own.

Plenty of virgins have certainly kissed (with tongue), and the description of that in fiction still gives me the biggest disconnect ever (really ppl why are you doing nothing with your lips ... it's kissing!!!).

A better analogy might be you convincingly writing about a person living in Paris when you yourself have never even visited. Being able to replicate the basic structure of the Eiffel Tower is more like knowing the mechanical slot A/tab B stuff.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-08 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Fact: I was much better at writing sex scenes before I had sex. The actual act is mostly boring and not nearly as exciting as fic makes it out to be, even when it's fun. The magic is gone, so honestly, I wish everyone who writes sex scenes has never had sex before.

While I agree that writing sex to be hyper realistic is a mistake if what you are trying to do is titilate an audience -- I don't think having had sex makes you worse at writing sex scene, either. Writing porn is a skill. If you could do it before, you can do it again.
