Going to be a pedantic Star Wars nerd for a little bit. The EU was canon for everyone writing professionally in it, with the clause that Lucas could change anything at any time.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
So, in other words, it wasn't canon.

I mean, it was always kind of a weird situation, because they definitely claimed it was canon. But it seems like that was mostly just because George didn't care about what was going on in the whole thing and then he did care about it again and it wasn't canon anymore. Just kind of a weird dumb situation.

Not a big deal really because most of the EU isn't that good anyway. and the parts that we liked will always be there for us either way so really who cares. divergent timelines, motherfuckers.

So in other words it was about as canon as Hans shooting first.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly!

Who knows what's canon, anyway. What's it matter.

That quote about the English language being as pure as a cribhouse whore who also mugs other languages in dark alleys for extra vocabulary? Could also apply to Star Wars canon.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Hans? Would he be a character in the Swedish version of Star Wars? XD

....

After some deliberation, it is my position that yes, this was an intentional spelling on my part, alluding to Lucas' plans to digitally replace Han Solo with a Swedish guy (thwarted by Disney).

The issue was, no writer could contradict anything that had already been written, so even though it wasn't canon, everyone had to just go with crap they hated with the knowledge that no matter what they did it could all be erased by George at any time.

Ah, I see what you're getting at.

Yeah that pretty much sucks, and it's kind of no wonder that so much of the EU fiction just kind of sucks.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have a lot of bitterness over the EU. And I'm pretty sure, all the games and cartoons are all officially canon, it's just the books/comics/things that didn't come straight from Lucasfilm/LucasArts that's EU.

I think though it was better then the quagmire that was Star Trek books though. Which did contradict each other all the damn time.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-12 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think Star Trek books had any system of quality control at all.

But see, that was the point. They were not canon. I'd much rather a ton of books that contradict one another that are not canon (so i can pick and choose) than a bunch of books that contradict one another and ARE canon.

See, that is why I liked the Star Trek novels so much. They weren't/aren't canon. At all. It was up to the reader to decide what they wanted to add to their own personal head canons.

did this cause some disparities? Y)es, but no one could argue that it was canon.

Star Wars, you had to, cause, as far as canon c an go with the EU anyway, it technically was until George said "NO." So you got stuck with some shitty novels or canceled novels (still miffed over the Shaak Ti novel getting axed BC).

Personally, I decided that The Courtship of Princess Leia and The Crystal Star were absolutely not canon. Horrible characterizations, and the latter's author seemed to have no conception of how hyperspace actually worked in-universe...and none of the New Jedi Order actually happened imo.

I never read those, mostly because I heard Courtship of Princess Leia was bad. And I just found....the rest of that universe not at all compelling. D: Which sucks cause I LOVE Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie, Lando, etc. But....bleh.

The first EU novels I ever read were the Corellia trilogy, and I liked them quite a bit. They included characters established in earlier books, though--Gaeriel from Truce at Bakura, and Mara Jade, introduced in the Thrawn trilogy...but I got by okay not knowing who they were. Actually, I think I might have read Truce at Bakura before Gaeriel showed up in the Corellia trilogy...I don't remember, I was like eight. And speaking of Luke's girlfriends, I can't remember what the books were called but the ones with Callista were pretty awful too.

I'd recommend the X-Wing series, but Luke, Han and Leia only rarely show up in those so they may not be your cup of tea.
