When you're talking to me online and use "lol" as punctuation. Why did you end that sentence with "lol"? It wasn't funny. Was it meant to be funny? Did I say something funny? No, I didn't. Why are you laughing??

In a similar vein, being condescending or talking down to me.

lol is used for more than just "haha that was funny" these days. You can't tell a person's tone in text, so adding in an lol to replace a smiley that might seem too personal works in lighting up the tone.

I don't know how so many people still haven't caught on to this.

Gods yes. Lol is so damn irritating, it makes me want to smack people, and when i see it my estimation of their iq goes down by about fifty points.
