The dude is one of the dwarves (Kili) who has been inexplicably prettied up. (Well, not that inexplicably - it's Aiden Turner).

The woman is a non-canonical character - an elf created especially for the film.

Ah, one of the dwarves...okay, I had no hope of ever guessing that, because I never, ever, ever thought any of the dwarves were supposed to be hottt (and also I was screwed on the name because it's been so long since I read it that Thorin and Gloin are the only two names of the dwarves' that stick out in my mind). In my mind's eye they were short, burly, and hairy. Bear-like, but fun sized.

And, off the hip, I just plain don't like the elf, I don't give two shits what sort of plot device she is. The Hobbit is a wonderful story by itself, and doesn't need prettifying and romance.
