US graduate programs generally require students to take a certain number of courses on top of any sort of dissertation or thesis to receive a degree. (I had to take a full-time course load for 2 years to get a masters in a social science subject.) You are a regular student in these classes, so attendance is as mandatory as the professor makes it and you will have exams and papers and other assignments to complete.

In addition to your coursework, if you are a TA you will have requirements on you time for that, as well. You may or may not be required to attend the lecture, but you will probably be expected to run discussion sections, hold office hours, help proctor exams, grade papers, etc. If you are an RA, you have to put in a certain number of hours in the lab.
