I don't think realism should be used an excuse for stupid shit, but I also don't think there should be a minority quota in your fictional works.

If you want to write about white people, write about white people. Shoehorning minorities into works is really obvious and comes off very obnoxiously. Also, apparently it's wrong for white people to write CoC because they don't understand what's it like, but if they don't write any they also get scolded? I guess white folks just have to stop writing or something?

Personally people should just write what comes to them; if a story about a straight white girl comes to you, write that. If a story about a gay black boy comes to you write that. Writing isn't about filling some political quota, it's about inspiration and following your muse. Write what comes from your spirit. People who make quotas for creative writing really don't understand art, methinks.

And I say this as a PoC. But whatever, white kids on tumblr have it all figured out for us I guees.

I agree. Admittedly, I am white [which automatically disqualifies my opinion in some people's eyes], but I don't think that story telling as a whole should be something that *has* to always be political, or historical. If that's what the writer wants to do? Great, but they also shouldn't be forced into including minorities into a story [or not writing them, as the case may be] just because someone, somewhere, decided that there was a quota that needed to be filled.

Personally, as a lesbian, I'd love for there to be more works with lesbian relationships/characters. However, I'd want it to be because that's what the author wanted to write - not because they felt that they had to shoehorn it in. Like the anon above said, you can tell when they're doing that and that's something that's just not fun to read.

hey, glad someone actually read my comment, over here in the totally wrong place... :)

I just wanted to say that I totally agree with what you're saying here as well. The issues are linked, obviously. I guess I suspect the ultimate answer to the question of more diversity in our media is having a greater diversity of viewpoints involved in it's creation. Telling artists that they should be inspired to write different more acceptable stories is pretty silly, and generally counter-productive.

The problem is that when those people who are inspired write those stories, there will still be assholes claiming that they're butchering the story to fit into some revisionist, political, PC agenda. Though hopefully those voices will be gone soon, or at least be a lot quieter!

Yup, that's pretty much it. There are assholes on both sides of every issue, unfortunately.
I usually support the moderate medium with these types of things, and in this case I definitely do.
