Except most people who regularly read mainstream romance and erotic totally panned 50 Shades (which, btw, started its life as a fanfic, so pointing out its shittiness doesn't necessarily support your argument)? There is a lot of crappy published romance and erotica out there, to be sure, but there's a lot of crappy fanfic, too. The published stuff is like fanfic in that you have to stumble your way through a lot of awful stuff to find the gems or even just discover authors, genres, etc. that cater to your particular tastes or hit your kinks. Just because you haven't managed to find the gems in published works doesn't mean that they aren't there. Then again, it may just be that you prefer certain tropes/styles that are more prevalent in fanfic than in published fic (although these go back and forth and gravitate from one to the other and back again).
