1. Incompetent. Competent doctors don't inject people with drugs without asking if they're allergic.

2. I don't recall if he got to use his (rather annoying) "I'm a doctor, not a ______" catchphrase in the reboot, but it's a consequence of his decision to spend most of his time on the bridge instead of his assigned post. On medical bay. That place where people go when they need a doctor and not a _______.

3. Sasses people who are actually on their assigned post and being useful (unlike himself). About Chekov: "Oh, he's seventeen." And how the fuck are YOU helping, broski?

4. Unfunny (to me).

NAYRT

...Those are some good reasons, actually.

Re: OP

nayrt

...those are sufficient reasons to dislike him for you? O.o Damn girl, what's your opinion of Kirk, I wonder?

But huh, maybe I should be impressed that such small or plot-contrivance-related reasons are being used to hate on a male character. Usually I've only seen this level of idiot myopia aimed at female characters who threaten to be people.

Re: OP

lmao I'd probably be completely indifferent to him if he wasn't often spoken as one of the highlights of the reboot and the third or fourth best thing since sliced bread.

He brings virtually nothing to my fandom table. I don't find him interesting and those "small or plot-contrivance-related reasons" tend to be complete killers when they make up for around 70% of the character's screen time.

NA

I can see that. Relatively small annoyances can start to loom very very large when everyone else seems to think the character is amazeballs.

Re: OP

You sound bitter and a bit like you would have disliked him regardless of what he did.

I mean, I don't like Bones. He's way too emotional, and I never relate to characters who have outbursts rather than attempting to solve anything. But...that's a reason that at least isn't based on what sounds like TOS annoyance.

on what sounds like TOS annoyance.

lmao I don't think I've watched ten episodes of TOS, if that. idgaf about TOS.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
And you were somehow already annoyed with his catchphrase?

Like I said--you would have disliked him regardless.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you stupid? His catchphrase is part of pop fucking culture.

Regardless, it didn't start annoying me until I started seeing it in fanfic, where it's ubiquitous. After I saw the film.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure this is the exact truth with no bias at all.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well (2) is kind of the a product of the dramatic impetus of the show - it's about this central cast of characters, and so they need to be everywhere, because the story's about them. But they're also the command structure of a starship and so they have these duties and responsibilities and so they really shouldn't be everywhere, but the narrative logic of the story requires. It's equally as silly for Kirk to be going down on away missions, but that's what the structure of the story requires.

And... well, I find "Dammit Jim" charming, but de gustibus non est disputandum. But some of the most memorable uses of it (most notably in the Horta episode), it's been in times where it was perfectly appropriate for the good doctor to be there.

I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but your opinion is wrong.

What are you doing here, Mr. Spock?

da

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
lol. I went through and tried to read it in Spock's voice. Close, but...

now I'm just laughing and can't stop at the idea of Spock calling anyone a broski.
rbhudson: (Enterprise)

Are you only this hateful toward reboot!Bones? Just curious, I might have missed something in this comment.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
So you don't actually dislike Bones, just the way he was portrayed in the latest movie.

I thought the "17" comment was great, but maybe that's cause I'm 31.

Re: OP

1) Anaphylactic shock and adverse drug reactions don't seem to be quite the issue in Star Trek that they are with us. Clearly they can fix issues as they crop up, and in the reboot they actually want Kirk to look sick.

2) He's the Consultant. They pass by the bedside and make the big decisions, put a hand in when it's a really high profile or difficult case, or an emergency, but he has medical lackeys to do the daily grunt work.

3) Xenobiological issues might pop up. Plus, you know, it is a tv-show/movie series. Character interaction and all that.

4) Well, you're just stupid.

Re: OP

1. THE POINT: He infected Kirk with a VACCINE to show symptoms to smuggle him onboard. Without McCoy's help, Kirk wouldn't even be there.

Kirk's allergy was nothing but a gag for the movie, get over yourself.

get over yourself.

Take your own advice.
