Yeah, I gotta agree the erotica books I have are pretty... awful. They are all pretty old-- early 90's, before there was much competition from the web. They aren't particularly realistic or original. Size kink seems to be taken as a default, because they all got to great lengths to describe how many inches all the giant cocks are. The porn was often rushed and over in just a paragraph or two, with little sensual or emotional detail, which, considering that's the entire point of the story, yeah.

But you know, that's the thing. When there's no particular competition, and there is a definite investment in resources, cookie cutter erotica seems the best business choice.

To be fair, if you look for older fanfic from the early 90s when fic was still making the shift from 'zines to online forums, you'll find a lot of the same kinks, rushed porn, and questionable writing. Some of that is just shifting writing aesthetic for different eras, too.

But I agree, there is a lot of cookie-cutter porn in published erotica because it's relatively quick to write and certain tropes just sell. Then again, there's some pretty cookie-cutter fanfic out there, too.

Yeah, but at least fanfiction is free. For the price of free I don't feel any obligation to finish reading a story that turns out to be kinda boring. With erotica, since I'm paying, I kind of expect it to be better -- more sensual, more imaginative, more something.
