I'm the opposite. It's a major pet peeve of mine when fans who are starved for close female friendship representation make up these fanon uber awesome friendship 5ever headcanons. It's like...okay yeah they generally get along due to being polite, but they aren't exactly best buds either.

But! the adorable fanart in Pixiv...

It's not expanded upon especially or addressed in-game (which I feel is a shame) but they really were good friends -- pay attention any time the party splits up and they're pretty much always chatting together. I mean, yeah, a lot of it is headcanon because the game just doesn't go into it very far at all, but they're also pretty frequently together, so it's not like they're just polite with each other.

Adding to their scenes together depending on how you split the party:

If you have Tifa in your party when Aeris dies, she approaches Aeris's body, kneels and softly brushes Aeris's hair away from her eyes, then abruptly gets up and rushes to the next party member to sob uncontrollably (in my playthrough I had Barret, so he held her while she kept crying), and is the visibly distraught for the rest of the scene.

This is a great point I didn't remember because I'm not at this point again in my playthrough (and it's been a really long time since I last played 7)! The points mentioned below are also pretty significant too.

And this is really why it bugs me that their friendship isn't made more explicit in the game, since even if subtle characterization like that can be neat... At the same time, all of these things are kind of easily missed or written off... and in addition, it really bothers me how much Tifa's characterization keeps coming back to Cloud, and her friendship with Aeris could have been something to lessen that.

Yeah. There are all sorts of neat cutscenes and dialogues that add depth to various characters and even divulge more of the various places you visit that are so, so easy to miss.

I think that in that sense it was a big mistake to make the party splits work the way they did; I would have preferred an approach like in other RPGs, where even if you only have 3 or 4 characters in your party for the fights, everyone is still there with you for the sake of the story and character interactions.

I get that it was for the sake of adding difficulty to a battle system that was actually very very exploitable (and possibly to encourage replays, like with the dating part in the Gold Saucer?) but still. :(

I actually prefer the way the game handled it. How I see it is that if in that specific game play, they didn't have much chance to interact, then they are good acquaintance. But if they are spending plenty of time fighting together, bam. Life time friendlove.

Not that they had much time together.

Cool, someone else who's replaying it! (Might you have been inspired by the totally-didn't-get-it secret from the other day, like I was?)

I started replaying right before that secret, haha. I don't need much inspiration to replay it, but I feel like every time I do, I pick something up that I never realized before. God, I love this game. <3

Haha, no, but I did see that! It was funny because that (and all of the Midgar/Shinra stuff in general) is probably my favorite aspect of the plot. (I'm not getting much out of Cloud and Sephiroth this time around, tbh)
I started a little while ago, mostly because it had been so long and I wanted to take another look at something I had loved when I first played it with a more critical eye. It's been interesting, haha.

Heh. Cool. (I actually second guessed that post, fearing that you might be the OP of that secret, even though the secret really reads as 'never played it'...)

And their very first interaction was tag-teaming to tease Cloud. Very much not just 'polite' - it's an instant friendship. Also, when the plate dropped, it was Aeris Tifa turned to to protect Marlene.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-13 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, they seem to have a really warm relationship as soon as Tifa's first bout of suspicion/jealousy finishes (in about five seconds, and then briefly again in the Shinra cells). After that, they are constantly hanging out, they're pretty much always together. When Aeris dies, Tifa's reaction is one of the most emotional and touching. Tifa also frequently sticks up for Aeris, particularly when Aeris's humanity is brought into question. Aeris herself is always very friendly toward Tifa.

Of course it's not a major plot point and therefore open to interpretation, but to say their relationship is merely "being polite" I think is actually wrong. If anything you could argue they hang out because they're women at about the same age, but even that doesn't sit with me. Aeris and Tifa do genuinely seem really close, as close as could be expected in their rather short relationship.

yes, all of this.

I'll add the little scene at the end of AC when Tifa senses Aerith's presence and thanks her. That cheered me up so much more when I watched right after playing the game again. Their bond wasn't forgotten :D
