Or, as I explained to my dad, who went to military school in India, why I liked this movie (back when I went to high school): "This movie? Not all of it is exaggerated. In fact, most of it isn't exaggerated, just certain bits and pieces. If you want to know what my daily life is like right now? This will give you a pretty good feel for it."
I think it might be one of those things where the humor only makes sense if you've been to high school and/or lived in that kind of situation. I saw often that some of my friends who lived a very different type of life in high school would say, "I don't get it" or find the humor kind of bland, whereas those of us who could connect even a tiny part of it to our own experiences in high school found it a bit funnier.
