I despise Glee with every fiber of my being, but this is a totally fair point.

I'm totally willing to give credit where it is due. If the show runners didn't so highly market itself in this way, I'd be happy with it and just accept that it's better than the vast majority of TV. However, because Glee holds itself out as such an inspiration (jfc, that concert movie), I think it should be called out when it's not up to par. Which does happen a lot (especially with lesbians, POC, and women in general.)

I have been extremely impressed with Glee's handling of the Unique storyline.
But I just can't bring myself to forgive them for all the other crap. Like finally giving the Asian girl a solo by having her sing Gangnam Style. And having a character that dumps a guy and starts dating another one after the first guy couldn't go out on a Friday night because he's struggling to overcome a learning disability and pass his classes, then continue to try to pass her off as little miss lovely and kind. And also having a guy tell her a girl that no guy wants to kiss a girl with puke on her lips and pretend that's an awesome way to tie up a bulimia storyline.
I'm just frustrated with so much that the awesome Unique storyline is buried under all the crap.

Hm. I kind of appreciate that people complain about it when it gets it wrong because glee is very prominent and a lot of people see it and a couple times since it's been on the air I feel like it's influenced other shows to represent people and get it right because people see them do something and say "well that's allowed and wow I could make that not suck."

And also if they get it wrong the yelling is loud about why. It inspires discussion kind of because it sucks.

I stopped watching after season 2 though. Good moments but overall trainwreck of a show.

People have been criticizing the show for these reasons since it started. It's not a new fashionable thing. How noticing the glaring confusion/hypocrisy about this stuff on Glee is like not noticing that they break into song.

The fat, black, trans character, however, is a fantastic singer who tried out for the Glee Project and got in. It's not like Glee designed that character. They just got incredibly lucky with Alex Newell.

However, I am suitably impressed by the great portrayal of the Downs characters.

Haven't watched since season 2, but I would be more willing to believe you if the first episodes with Unique didn't seem to conflate being trans with being a drag queen in pretty uncomfortable ways.

Look, my problem with Glee is that it's always been the "Rachel and Finn" show. They can try and "deal with" other issues all they want, but it's always going to be about what special snowflakes those two are, and everyone else is secondary. It makes it extremely difficult for me to buy their attempts at being PC when they play up the adorable straight, white couple as being the most important.

I think you make a great point. I've always viewed it this way, myself. Is this show still on, by the way? I saw a secret the other day with a mention of some character I am not familiar with. I know I can google, but I really don't have the patience. Especially with this weak ass internet connection.

Yeah no, and fuck you. I'm not going to be grateful for horribly offensive representation just because it's representation in the first place. I'd rather see my identity erased than crucified.

Yeah. Glee is awful and I frequently root for the cheerleader coach (who is awesome).

A FUCKING MEN. To hell with all the crap Glee gets. It goes places other shows don't, so naturally it offends now and then. And it's not a crime to have characters who aren't perfect PC angels. It doesn't mean it's what the creators think, or behavior they endorse. Bad behavior is realistic, and "calling it out" all of the time can be really condescending to the audience.

just because a subject is being represented (and done badly) doesn't make it any more better than not representing the subject at all.

I'll agree with the representation of characters with Downs Syndrome. But Unique? The fact that her character is there isn't enough. She's simultaneously used as a joke (the abundance of shemale jokes is really offensive) and then used to make an after-school-special type of message that Glee never really follows through on (ie, the Rizzo thing, only to be replaced the next week).
