The cringing thing during the kissing was the same for me until I was about 20 years old.

Nah girl. Men like to keep us barefoot and in the kitchen by feeding us that romance shit from conception. Fuck that. You are doing it right! Break away from the patriarchal insistence that women and girls need a man to complete them and control them and do things your way. There's no doing it wrong if you follow your brain.

I'm probably taking troll bait, but I don't think OP said that romance was patriarchal or any such. Just that they weren't into the Disney way of doing it.

Yawn.

See... Disney movies are the only things I can stand musical numbers in. Regular shows, normal movies with people breaking into song/singing to a loved one (outside of Bollywood films) have me muting so fast or just fast forwarding to get back to the plot.

I can love the movie itself but I will still get severe secondhand embarrassment anytime someone breaks into song...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
So you hate Disney movies pretty much since most of them are all about the musical numbers and romance.

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2012-12-18 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. You're not really doing it wrong. Disney movies generally include a pretty wide variety of things to appeal to as many people as possible. So maybe the romance and musical numbers don't appeal to you, but clearly other parts of the movie do. Nothing wrong with that.

You're not necessarily doing it wrong, but do you have any idea why you cringe like that?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I like the musical numbers unless I don't like the song, but I am also a fan of musicals.

But the romance? That I can partially agree on. But I think a lot of times the romance in Disney movies is not well constructed enough for me to think it's cute, or it's just not my main reason for liking the movie.

There goes the theory that all little girls want romance in their movies.

You're not alone, OP. When I was younger, I turned my head from all the kissing scenes, but this is partly due to my upbringing; "People kissing!? Close your eyes, boy!".

Can't get why you cringe at the musical numbers though, unless the song was not to your taste.

I like the music, but I couldn't care less about the romance. Albeit I couldn't care less about the romance in like, 90% of the movies I watch anyway, so it's less Disney and more 'does every movie HAVE to have a romance plot these days?'

Seriously, when I can go into pretty much any movie and say 'there's the main character, there's the love interest' within five minutes of seeing each of them, and I am otherwise terrible at picking out tropes...damn.

I liked Brave and The Avengers partly because neither of them really had any romance. In fact, with the exception of The Princess Bride, pretty much all of my favourite movies don't have romance.

So no, I don't think it's weird that you cringe at stuff like that. It's oversaturated. Maybe some part of you recognizes the cliche and shies away from it.

[personal profile] ex_paola492 2012-12-18 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my God, me too! The only musical numbers I can stand are the ones in Mulan and some of the Hunchback of Notre Dame because "HELLFIRE!!!! DARK FIRE!!!! I HAVE A RAGING BONER FOR ESMERALDA!!!!" etc. was a great song. Also it made me appreciate The Emperor's New Groove and other movies that didn't include horrible musical numbers.

Also remember Nala when making bedroom eyes to Simba during a musical number? I was watching it with my mom and praying she wouldn't notice because duuuude.

I...kind of understand your viewpoint. I see these cool characters and then groan - WHY do they have to be in love?

The only song I hate in this movie is Kiss the Girl, though.

Bur...but...life is so swell when people just burst into song!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I almost always prefer no kissing in my television series and movies.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe most kids didn't 'cringe', but I'm pretty sure many of the kids weren't that invested in the romantic plots, tbh.

I know when I play-acted stuff from Disney films with my friends, we pretty much deleted the romantic plots and focussed on the adventures. Also I always liked the songs, but I can name at least five people whom I know didn't, so there is that.

I never minded the romance, but I usually found the musical numbers really tiresome when I was a kid. At best, they just weren't that appealing to me.

I'm also picky about musicals in general, though.

Outside of the romances and musical numbers...what's left? O.o

Before I hit puberty, I didn't care much about the kissing. After, I loved those parts. Either way, the musical parts were actually also kind of annoying to me too. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Disney music (when I'm in the mood for it), but when I was watching the films as a kid I was all "just get to the dialogue/story already!!!"

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I think the songs in disney movies usually suck except for the frog princess. I LOOOOOOOOVE new orleans music.
