You are clearly fighting your boner. Stop. Just admit you want him to make that gargling "gollum gollum" noise while his face is trapped between your legs.

Is it tasty, my precious? Does it taste like fishes?

Is there somewhere I can send the bill for the therapy I'm going to need? I'm kind of laughing but mostly horrified. Bravo. I'm going to go hit my head against the nearest wall until the mental images go away.

Everyone reacts to everything differently. He freaks you out in a bad way? Okay. Other people love him? Okay.

...okay then. Cheers.

wasn't Gollum meant to be creepy and disturbing, though?

I don't think Tolkien wrote him to be the fandom heartthrob.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think Tolkien had him more pitiable than creepy.

I think so, too. While he's definitely creepy, I find him to be more of a tragic figure than anything else. Although he brought his ultimate fate and a good deal of his misery upon himself, the Ring saw to it that the odds were stacked against him from the beginning, and he suffered so much throughout his life that I can't help but feel terrible for him, especially knowing that he came so close to redemption and just missed it.

If you have to ask why people love Gollum, you'll never know.

Eh, my mother found the Gollum very unsettling but she admitted that the thing had quite a basketfull of issues (the pond reflection scene, anyone?) which maybe is why almost everyone loves him. Take away his personality and character, and I think he would drop to the bottom of the popularity chart.

I always found Gollum really unsettling in the books (especially The Hobbit). That + the UNBELIEVABLY TERRIFYING Gollum in the Rankin/Bass cartoon have given me a lifetime of nightmares. Serkis!Gollum didn't bother me too much in LotR, although he didn't make me a fan of the character, so I thought I'd be okay seeing The Hobbit with that Gollum. NOPE. As well done as the scene was - and it really was! - Gollum was really upsetting, and I was so glad when it was over. I don't know, I can handle a lot of things other people seem to find super creepy or scary, but I just can't deal with Gollum.

Sorry? :/ You aren't always going to be a fan of every character, and there's plenty of other characters to love in LOTR and The Hobbit. I find Gollum fascinating and while I sometimes pity him, a lot of my feelings for Gollum can be summed up in the phrase, "You magnificent bastard."

My mom called him "The devil" when she first saw him in The Hobbit trailer. She was probably hoping that Bilbo would stab him while I was sitting there going, ";_; dammit Gollum".

I think he's *supposed* to be unsettling.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I find him deeply upsetting. In fact, I was completely unbothered by having to get up and pee during his scenes.

Of course, I think he's unsettling because he makes me think of how easy we, as humans, are to warp into something hateful and cruel.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
*shrugs* I don't like Gollum, and I agree he's creepy. He's kind of a necessary part of the story, but still...creepy. I confess I tend to fastforward through his scenes when I'm rewatching.

Yes, he's creepy and unsettling . . . that's the point?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan of Gollum either. Creepy.

I think the only reason my friend loves him is because she's a special ed teacher and he acts like her students. And that just makes me feel guilty about not liking him.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
He was the only part of The Hobbit I didn't hate so i guess that makes him my favorite part.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
You are right and totally get his character! He is supposed to be unsettling and frightening. That doesn't mean you have to like him or anything, but ignore the trolls, you are doing it right. :)

Whereas I applaued gleefully when he showed up in The Hobbit. *hangs head* I dunno, man, I just get him. On a spiritual level.

Haven't seen The Hobbit yet (it's my Boxing Day (Dec 26) movie), but like a lot of others have said, I think the whole point of Gollum is that he's unsettling.

Let's face it, no matter how unsettling, he's an integral part of the story. Sure, he's only a minor character in The Hobbit but in LotR he's almost as important as Frodo, which when you consider how The Hobbit has been made years after LotR was, means his small part in The Hobbit is utterly integral because it establishes how Bilbo met him and got the Ring from him - a plot that is the basis for LotR.

So, TL;DR - go ahead and keep disliking him. Just accept that he's an unavoidable unpleasant part of the story and move on to the parts you do like.
