That thing is hideous. Is it wearing purple body paint or really revealing spandex? Gross, either way.

Just generic superhero spandex. That's the Phantom: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantom_%28comics%29

I'm not as familiar with the Phantom as I am with many other comic heroes, but right on. I could get into that.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Is that the Phantom? I didn't think anyone liked the Phantom.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, I find him kinda refreshing compared to most superheros for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
He was pretty big in Australia when I was a kid. I'm not sure if he's still in the daily cartoons in the paper though.

There is. It's called Batman.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Except they're not very similar?

Don't mind me, I'm just funnin' :)

My dad used to read the Phantom all the time when I was little, so this guy definitely has a special place in my heart.

Oooo, The Phantom! Aside from that goofy movie, and the comic strip that used to run in the paper (which I loved when I was a kid), is he even available any more?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
The comic strip is still running, actually! And it is pretty awesome!

da

huh, think i may need to get into the phantom for the new year

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
The Phantom is awesome. Right up there with the old school Shadow (not that asstastic movie...well, not the movie for either of them).

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that always bugged me about the Phantom is how the original guy was effectively stranded but still managed to find civilization to get a conveniently white wife to help carry on the mantle, and each generation keeps doing the same despite growing up with the locals right around them. Only one Phantom in the whole line do I recall marrying outside the race, and even then she was a paler shade of Asian.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, it at least happened more than once. I recall wives from India and Mongolia -- and Anna, Chris Walker Somerset's wife, was black.

FUCK YOU LJ

Yay! The Phantom! I really wish there was a current non-movie fandom. This guy deserves some love. I never miss a Frew comic. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
If only the whole concept wasn't fundamentally racist, I'd be right with you, OP. (I say this as a fan! Even of the ridiculously terrible Indian version I acquired a few volumes of somehow! But there would be so much racism wank in the fandom, and they would be right.)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
This was pretty much my reaction to this secret. I like the Phantom and I like Kit Walker, but the concept is very much DNW when examined in any level of critical detail. Personally, I didn't quite realize this until I started writing a fanfic, and then was like, "...Oh. People are going to... and this is kind of... never mind, then."

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2012-12-18 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
Gods, yes. It was one of the first comics I ever read, and I still love it dearly. There are a couple of stories that I still re-read fairly often, and I'd love to see a fandom of any kind!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
No OP. You have reminded me that I like the Phantom! Now I need to bury my feelings
