Can't read!

What's with all the hard to read secrets? Seriously, how hard is it to toss a stroke or a drop shadow around your text? Or, you know, not use such lightfaced font in a color that's so close to your background?

JFC guys. Do you want people to read and comment or not?

A question for the ages!

A drop shadow puts a shadow behind the letters and is a great way to show a bit of separation between your background and your text when they are similar colors or you're using a stupid, hard-to-read font.

How do you use it? I'll use it!

What program are you using?

I try to make a high contrast on mine and choose a font that keeps it legible. I use Gimp, though, and I don't actually know how to make a drop shadow using that.

imo outlines around text are better than drop shadows. this is how to make them in gimp (http://www.gimptalk.com/index.php?/topic/8759-how-to-add-a-border-to-your-text-gimp-is-as-good-as-photosh/) (via [personal profile] ooh_mrdarcy)

Pretty hard, if you're using Paint. And by "hard" I mean "impossible." Not everyone has the luxury of buying/torrenting a fancy photo editor for the sake of making fandom secrets.

you don't have to torrent GIMP, it's open source

It's not that hard using paint, actually, if you have windows 7. Do a test version of your secret, note the size and font you're using. Then on the actual version, write a black colored version of your secret first but same size and font. When you're done, write it again using the color you wanted, same size and font, and move the text box so the color you want is slightly above and left of the black text.

This works better with larger and thicker words, like impact fonts or bold fonts. If your writing is one pixel thick and the same color as the background, a drop shadow won't help much.

I make all my secrets using pixlr.com

It's basically a browser based photoshop. I think you can even insert images from the web and then upload directly to a host.

Also isn't GIMP free?

It's entirely possible to make a drop shadow in MS Paint. Choose your shadow color and put your secret text in it where you want to have your secret text, then choose your main text color and put the secret text in that color on top of the shadow-text, offset by a pixel or two. Ta-da!

Not everyone has the luxury of buying/torrenting a fancy photo editor for the sake of making fandom secrets.

There are some perfectly good free, open-source image manipulation programs out there. A lot of people have already suggested GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/), which is roughly as powerful as Photoshop, but I personally feel Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net/) has an easier interface for new users to learn-- it's not as powerful, but as you said, this is Fandom Secrets, not an art school.
