Beta Reading

(Anonymous) 2012-12-18 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
So I offered to beta read for the first time in my five years of writing fanfic for a fandom I've recently been getting into. And they were the most crappily written fics EVER. Oh my God, does no one know how to use commas? Or where to put quotes? Or how to use conjunctions? OR anything of use when it comes to writing something? And, as the cherry on top, random, unwarned for, rape scene where the victim was like "hey, this is not bad at all!" WHAT? Like, ok, I get that they were first drafts, but they were just horrible!

This is why I only beta for close friends who know how to write.

I just started beta-reading for the first time for someone I didn't know and it was actually pretty well-written and it didn't really need much work at all, minor rewriting for awkwardness and some character and plot adjustments but it definitely wasn't offensively bad. Everything turned out better than expected.

one of these things is not like the other.

Not knowing how to use commas =/= unwarned rape scene. A lot of people USE BETAS because they have issues with commas and such and need the help. What the hell do you think a beta if for? Maybe if you just want to be a typo only beta say that up front. Or if you just want to beta for characterization, say that up front.

Unwarned for rape scene? Whole 'nother kettle of fish that's sucky whether you were betaing or not.

As a rule, I only beta for people who write as well as I do. If they don't have anything posted somewhere that I can read, I make up an excuse about how I'm too busy with work/real life/my own fic/etc. because, fuck dude, I'm all about practice makes better, but all the explanation of comma rules in the world is not going to fix shitty fic.

Anon for obvious reasons.

As someone who does their best work at the editing stage I feel very awkward about this. I abuse commas. I fix it. It's not that bad. Besides, you offered to beta for this person (people?). You could have not offered couldn't you?

However, the unwarned rape thing is a very horrible thing to go through. I'm sorry that happened. If I were you I would have a very strongly worded conversation with that writer before ever touching their stuff again, if you ever do.

This is my life. I mean, I beta for anyone who asks usually, but some people. It's like they've never picked up a book in their lives.

When I proofread shit for people in class I bleed pen ink on it.

I don't really feel bad. If you've submitted it to me for proofreading, I'm gonna be very objective and say what's on my mind, and if you have horrible conventions...I'm not going to judge you or say so, but I'm still going to correct everything I see that is wrong.

I'd like to beta, actually, but I don't really know how to put myself out there for that. Nor do I have a lot of extra time for it...and most of my friends don't write a lot of fic (in fandoms I'm familiar with). The one who does is a naturally gifted writer so I usually don't have much to say to her haha (and I've never really beta'd for her, she just sometimes shows me drafts of things, which I enjoy reading 'cause they're awesome)
