Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!

As a non-US anon, I simply can't understand why 'provided by insurance' gets equated with 'directly funded by other people' in these debates. It makes no sense to me. Everyone pays into the insurance, everyone gets different things back out of it. Why should anyone get to dictate what others should and should not be allowed to get out of their insurance? That's not how insurance works!

because thanks to the propaganda during the cold war (and many wars, really) + a degrading public education, many americans have this notion that proper healthcare = communism/socialism, and communism/socialism = EVIL MUST KILL IT

+ the good ol' "SCREW YOU, GOT MINE, BOOTSTRAPS, ETC. (except when I need help, of course)"

A lot of health insurance (practically speaking almost all of it) is either government funded or subsidized, or obtained through and paid for by an employer. So it's either the employer or the government who's funding the contraceptives. Which is why the question of whether employers should be allowed to choose whether to pay for insurance plans that allow people to buy contraceptives comes up with some frequency.

(In other words, the answer is because America's health care system is hilariously broken)

Well, yeah, but I still don't see why it matters. I mean, everyone pays into it, right? And you live in a free country, right? So where's the problem?
