I think that they both care about each other deeply, but I also think they're really bad for each other as a couple (although I love the idea of them breaking up and being back together several years down the road or staying broken up and just learning to be close friends).

However, they are my two absolute favorite characters in the show, ngl, and I see absolutely no problem with shipping it. As long as you're enjoying yourself, you're not doing it wrong. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.
