Re: Mass shootings and The Mentally Ill
(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 12:25 am (UTC)(link)That being said, mental illness is probably not the only factor, nor do the majority of those diagnosed with some sort of mental illness commit acts of violence (and it'd be much, much more useful if the actual diagnoses were used rather than just "they had a history of mental illness" which is SO broad).
I think creating more options for people to receive mental health care, and also possibly more options for people to get help for their loved ones, would be a step in the right direction to preventing some of these crimes.
(For example: my uncle is bipolar. Although he's on medication, sometimes it stops working. When it does, he often has episodes. In the past, during these episodes he's destroyed property that isn't his and left threatening voice mails on my grandma's machine. When she's tried to call the police to get him help, she's been told "He hasn't hurt anyone yet, so we can't do anything unless he says he wants help." When he's in a manic state he thinks he's perfectly fine, and when he's normal he also thinks he's fine and refuses to sign anything giving Grandma the ability to seek medical help for him when he has an episode. It's becoming a serious problem--my grandma even had to skip my brother's wedding because my uncle was having another episode around the same time--and it's really, really frustrating and stressful for everyone involved. I can understand the need for people to have rights, but once he starts threatening to harm my grandma I really think they should be able to put him in the hospital for a few days to make sure that he won't hurt anyone.)
I do think that's not the only solution, though. I don't think gun control is the only solution, either. I think this issue is much, much too complex to have one simple solution. There's probably many, many things in our country that causes this.
Re: Mass shootings and The Mentally Ill
I'm sorry your family is dealing with that, Nonny.
