Re: Mass shootings and The Mentally Ill

(Anonymous) 2012-12-19 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who's had a fair share of mental health issues -

I want to say first that I haven't noticed the discourse taking place in the same way that you have here - I haven't seen the amount of vindictiveness towards mental illness or the negativity towards mental health that you have - not to say that it hasn't taken that form in some places, but I kind of feel like you're being a bit overblown - most of the commentary that I've seen on the issue has been from a place of sympathy and sensitivity towards mentally healthy people. No one that I've seen is arguing in favor of locking up people with mental health issues, they're arguing for better and more available treatment, which is a totally different thing. I certainly haven't seen anyone claiming that the mentally ill commit most crimes; the gun control discourse right now has almost nothing to do with violent crime in general, but only with spree crimes.

I think the argument is that, if we had a better mental health infrastructure, if we had better treatment and more available treatment, people would be more mentally healthy, and that one benefit of that is that people would be more likely to be treated instead of doing something like shooting their girlfriend and then driving to their place of work and shooting themselves in front of their bosses, or storming into a school and going off. And I think that is true. And I think the argument is that this would be better for people with mental illnesses - that's absolutely the center of the argument, in fact.

We have a completely broken mental health system (and a completely broken health care system); saying that we need to fix it is a rational response, especially in the wake of a tragedy like this that demands some kind of response. I think we should address gun violence as well, but I don't see any thing wrong with "make the mental health care system better" as a response to Sandy Hook.
