Re: Non-fandom confessions/unpopular opinions!

I hate Rudolph the Red-nose Reindeer - the song. I'm sure as a reindeer, Rudolph is perfectly lovely. But seriously? The other reindeer ostracized him for being "different" until he became useful to them. Then they're all about being his BFF.

Yes, I know this makes me sound like a SJW. But I've thought this much longer than SJWs have existed. All I can think is "Poor Rudolph. Those reindeer aren't really your friends."

I considered making this a regular secret but figured it'd end up in the fail-bar. Is Rudolph a fandom? Have a fandom? Whichever. Did not want to end up fail-barred.

+1

It's basically "it's okay to be different (or have a disability which is the "message" I got from it being disabled myself) as long as you have a useful superpower!" Otherwise you deserve to be picked on and abused.

You're nothing until you're something. They might've not been "real" friends, but at least they weren't torturing him anymore. I'd rather have people realize my worth later than never at all.

Says someone who's never experienced bullying.

Says something who has experienced "friends" bullying me and then playing it off as a joke, from kindergarten to university peers deciding they hate me for no discernible reason and ostracizing me and convincing others to ostracize me, people destroying and stealing my things/clothes (while on my body), guys and girls (I'm female) punching me in the face (or hurting me physically) because they decide they don't like me (or play it off as a joke), being threatened with physical violence, etc. I've been bullied by peers and adults (when I was child) alike.

So, I think you're the one who hasn't experienced bullying. Because if I could have done something to convince all the people who inexplicably hated me that I was a worthwhile person and they loved me afterward, I'd take it. Yeah, I'd still be fucking bitter, but at least I wouldn't have to deal with stress and loneliness of being ostracized.

NA

They never should have bullied you in the first place and you should have to fucking prove yourself to anyone.

The song is stupid because no one bothers to defend Rudolph and yet Santa wants his help one day. I mean really? Why the fuck should he after all the abuse he's been put through?

Some people have to prove they are worthy. Facts of life. Either you learn how to maneuver in life and prove your worth if you are one of the unlucky who need to, or hope you fall by the wayside to avoid further abuse. Don't expect people are going to defend you.

Why the fuck should the person to whom you've replied been put through the abuse they've been put through? They shouldn't have. But they were.

Oops, I typoed - that was supposed to be "SHOULDN'T" have to prove yourself to anyone.

wtf, you responded to an anonymous person on the internet, how would you even know they've been bullied or not?

I hated it too. I found it uncomfortable that this was a song that is taught to little children who likely have faced this situation and can't pull off awesome Santa saving stunts to impress their students so they might try something stupid instead.

For some reason it struck me only this holiday season that even their shallow acceptance is bullshit. The ostracized 'weird kid' suddenly bests them all at their big moment? Yeah, they aren't going to love him because of that. (Unless, I dunno, they all adore Santa so much that his approval is good enough for them. Still.)

Yeah, I always thought that was a little fucked up, too.

There's a version of that song where Rudolph calls them out on it and they apologize and say that they're gonna make an effort to change.

It kind of sucks as a song, though.
