Re: Mass shootings and The Mentally Ill

I'm sorry that that's what you've been seeing. What I've been seeing is something a bit more nuanced: that the problem is a combination of cultural issues and inattention to mental health. I haven't come across anyone suggesting that everyone who shows signs of mental illness should be locked away. I've instead come across individuals who have lamented that we don't do more to help those who are mentally ill, that we deny that something is wrong and turn away from them. I've come across individuals who have argued that we shouldn't be tossing the mentally ill into prison -- we should instead be spending our resources on treating them.

And we should. We absolutely should. Even today, there is a lot of denial in this country as regards mental health. A lot of people still don't want to believe that mental illness exists. But it does, and we need to treat it like any other illness. Instead, we treat it like a quirk. It's neither compassionate nor productive.

On another note, I would argue that the problem isn't our "gun culture" per se (there are countries with gun cultures that are not as violent as our own); it's our culture of aggression. To be violent is to be manly, and to be manly is to be important. If we want things to change, then we need to take a long, hard look at our value system.

Well, it's also our culture of gun violence, and our culture of paranoia, and our culture of go-it-alone self-reliance, and.... and our culture has a lot of problems, really.
