Re: Mass shootings and The Mentally Ill

In fairness the issue is complicated, and no one thing is the sole root of the problem. Not mental illness, not gun culture, or even bullying/abuse.

Because it is a complex issue the masses [or at least the media] are going to try to simplify it so there can be a 'quick fix' and everything can go back to being fine. It's not a good response, or even a particularly rational one - but it is one that comforts people, and politicians will back it because it'll make them look good.

Personally, I think there need to be changes on various things - there should be better care for the mentally ill [and I mean that in general, not just because of shootings], gun control laws do need some changes, particularly when it comes to whose qualified to buy/own guns.

But...I do feel you about the current out cries about the mentally ill. I've lived with mental illness for the vast majority of my life, and already had some 'fun' experiences with the stigma attached to it...and well. See this stuff really makes me sad...but at the same time? You're comment does too since you seem to be lashing out at just about everyone/thing else which really doesn't help your argument.

I think you do make a good point here: our national media is mostly terrible, and completely terrible when it comes to politics. That's something we need to keep in mind.
